  • [01] FOREIGN MINISTER - UK - CYPRUS

Minister of Foreign Affairs Marcos Kyprianou said on Wednesday that if Britain wishes to effectively assist the process for a solution to the Cyprus problem it should exert pressure and influence on Turkey, so that Turkey becomes more constructive in talks for a settlement.

Speaking at Larnaca Airport before departing for Athens, Kyprianou noted that the Greek Cypriot side wanted a solution and the reunification of the island, and needed no other motive.

He also said that, given that the UK wishes to play a role in the Cyprus problem, actions such as that of High Commissioner Peter Millet, who attended the unveiling ceremony of a monument in the Turkish occupied areas for the British soldiers who lost their lives during the struggle to rid Cyprus from British colonial rule, undermine the image the UK is trying to present.

``We consider this action unacceptable,`` he said, adding that ``it is more of a matter for the British government, since it certainly weakens the role it wishes to play.``

    [02] PRESIDENT - VETERANS

President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias expressed certainty on Wednesday that the day of the reunification of Cyprus will come soon and pointed out that ``it is necessary for all of us to show the greatest possible political maturity as well as determination in order to assert our rights without violating basic principles.``

Addressing an event on the occasion of the Remembrance Day for the victims of the two World Wars, in Nicosia, organised by the Pancyprian Association of World War II Fighters, President Christofias assured that the Greek Cypriot side continues persistently, consistently and with political will to struggle for the solution of the Cyprus problem on the basis of a bizonal, bicommunal federation.

In his address, which was read out by Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou, President Christofias said Remembrance Day points out and emphasises that peace, freedom and democracy are values that were attained through sacrifices and that for their defence a constant struggle against all those policies which impose wars and promote injustice is necessary.

He referred to the history of the two World Wars and noted that ``our country also became a victim of invasion and occupation`` and that ``Cyprus responded to the antifascist call of World War II and defended the freedom of many countries in order to be able, after that, to acquire its own freedom.``

``Unfortunately, Cyprus never had the chance to enjoy its absolute freedom. The colonialists denied Cyprus the self evident. Through mistakes and omissions and through foreign interventions with fascism as the apex in a new form which led to the division of our country,`` he added.
