  • [01] CYPRUS PRESIDENT - BRITISH PM - MEETING

The Cyprus issue, with epicenter the negotiations for a solution to the Cyprus issue, combined with Turkeys EU December date, will be at highlight of the talks President of the Republic Demetris Christofias and British Prime Minister Gordon Brown will have on Wednesday in the British capital.

It is a meeting which both sides attribute great significance. The Cypriot side notes the significance of London on the two issues while the British side considers very critical the current stage of the talks on Cyprus and if these are to produce results, all parties should have a positive influence.

For this reason, meetings between the British Premier Brown and Foreign Secretary David Miliband took place between the Greek Prime Minister and Foreign Minister George Papandreou in London.

Miliband also met with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayip Erdogan, his Turkish counterpart Ahmet Davutoglu and the EU chief negotiator Egemen Bagis.

On 18 November, Cypriot Foreign Minister Markos Kyprianou will be in London for talks while Davutoglu will also be in the British capital before the end of the month.

British Minister of State for Europe Chris Bryant, will also visit Cyprus on 24 November.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied the islands northern third.

President Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat have been engaged in UN-led direct negotiations since September 2008, with an aim to reunite the island.
