  • [01] DEFENCE MINISTER - CYPRUS - ESDP

Cypriot Minister of Defence Costas Papacostas said that, ``despite the fact that the Cyprus problem remains unresolved and that 37 per cent of the territory of our country is still under occupation, the Republic of Cyprus actively participates in the majority of European Security and Defence Policy (ESDP) operations to reinforce in every way the effort of the EU to establish a common ESDP.``

``A just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem would enable Cyprus to play a greater role towards that end,`` he added.

Addressing an ESDP orientation course, organised in Cyprus by the Ministry of Defence in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Papacostas said that ``the efforts of the Republic of Cyprus for peace and stability are focused on the substantive talks which resumed in Nicosia on 3 September 2008, aiming to put an end to the 35-year-long forcible division of the island because of the Turkish invasion in 1974.``
