  • [01] PRESIDENT CHRISTOFIAS - LONDON - CYPRUS ISSUE

President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias has said that if Turkey did not change its course regarding the Cyprus problem, then efforts for a settlement would once again fail.

Speaking on Sunday evening after an event in London to mark the 30th anniversary since the establishment of the Cypriot Community Centre in North London and replying to questions, President Christofias said that ``we hope without, however, turning a blind eye.``

``If Turkey does not decide to change its course to solve the Cyprus problem, we will once again be faced by deadlocks. I hope and wish that the Turkish leadership will change course so that we have a solution soon,`` he added.

Furthermore, President Christofias congratulated the Cypriot community in the United Kingdom for the Community Centre and noted that ``we should take lessons from this to Cyprus so that we achieve the same with the reunification of our country, the restoration of its independence with the withdrawal of the foreign troops, the restoration of human rights so that we can live again with our Turkish Cypriot compatriots, leaving behind the very bad past and the damage done by one community to the other with the encouragement of third parties.``

The event was attended by many Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots living in London, and political and other personalities.

[02] DEFENCE MINISTRY - EU SEMINAR

Cypriot Minister of Defence Costas Papacostas said on Monday that, ``despite the fact that the Cyprus problem remains unresolved and that 37 per cent of the territory of our country is still under occupation, the Republic of Cyprus actively participates in the majority of European Security and Defence Policy (ESDP) operations to reinforce in every way the effort of the EU to establish a common ESDP.``

``A just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem would enable Cyprus to play a greater role towards that end,`` he added.

Addressing an ESDP orientation course, organised in Cyprus by the Ministry of Defence in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Papacostas said that ``the efforts of the Republic of Cyprus for peace and stability are focused on the substantive talks which resumed in Nicosia on 3 September 2008, aiming to put an end to the 35-year-long forcible division of the island because of the Turkish invasion in 1974.``

``The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr. Demetris Christofias, and the leader of the Turkish Cypriot Community, Mr. Mehmet Ali Talat, have started intensive talks under the auspices of the UN in an attempt to solve the Cyprus problem on the basis of UN resolutions, the Charter of Human Rights, and European values and principles, but also on the basis of a just compromise. We hope that this solution will be durable and lead to the welfare and progress of all Cypriots within the framework of the EU,`` he said.

He expressed hope that ``the talks underway between the leaders of the two communities will have positive results for a just and viable solution of the Cyprus problem and the reunification of our country.``
