  • [01] NATIONAL COUNCIL MEETING

Cyprus National Council, the top advisory body to the President on the handling of the Cyprus problem, resumed deliberations on Friday.

During Fridays session, which is chaired by President of the Republic Demetris Christofias, the leaders of the parliamentary parties were scheduled to continue discussion on mapping out the strategy, which the Greek Cypriot side will follow on the Cyprus issue as well as Cypruss strategy regarding the assessment of Turkeys EU accession course in December by the EU Council.

During the previous three sessions earlier this week, the parties submitted documents with their views both on Turkey`s EU bid and on the Cyprus problem. President Christofias will codify the positions of the parties.

Cyprus, an EU member-state since 2004, has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied 37 per cent of its territory. President Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat began on September 2008 UN-led direct negotiations for a mutually agreed solution to the Cyprus problem.

Turkey refuses to recognize the Republic of Cyprus and has so far failed to open its port and airports to Cypriot ships and airplanes as outlined by the additional protocol to the Ankara Agreement, the customs union between Turkey and the EU.

    [02] PRESIDENT EU G20

President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias has participated in the Brussels Informal Meeting of EU heads of state and government during which the leaders agreed on a common position ahead of the G20 summit next week in Pittsburgh, USA.

In statements after the meeting, which was concluded Thursday evening, President Christofias said that the EU leaders adopted the EU positions on exit strategies from measures taken to recover economy, on the reinforcement of the supervision of the financial system, on limiting bonuses of high ranking officials of banks, which have received state support during the crisis, as well as on the strengthening of the International Monetary Fund.

President Christofias also referred to the common EU position on financing efforts to deal with the repercussion of climate change, ahead of the Climate Change Conference that will take place in December in Copenhagen.

The EU, President Christofias said, aims to increase changes so that in Copenhagen a global, ambitious agreement is reached on climate change.

Cyprus fully shares the view that climate change needs immediate action on European and global level, he stressed.

[03] KENYA VICE PRESIDENT FM MEETING

The Kenyan Vice President held a meeting Friday with Cypriot Foreign Minister Markos Kyprianou, who briefed him on the latest developments regarding the Cyprus talks and discussed with him issues of mutual concern, like the enhancement of bilateral relations and piracy on the shores of Somalia.

I would like to thank the Minister for briefing me in detail on the very important matter of the Cyprus problem. We hope that in future it will be possible to find a peaceful solution to this problem so that there will be unity of Cyprus which is always a priority, he said.
