  • [01] RUSSIA CYPRUS QUESTION NESTERENKO

The position of Russia regarding the solution of the Cyprus problem remains unchanged, the Russian Foreign Ministry`s official representative Andrey Nesterenko has said.

He also flatly denied that there has ever been an issue of recognizing the Turkish occupied areas.

The position of the Russian Federation on the Cyprus settlement remains unchanged : we are in favour of the implementation of the relevant UN Security Council resolutions, against efforts to impose on the sides any formula from outside or any artificial timeframes to settle the Cyprus issue, he noted.

He added that the leaders of the Russian Federation have repeatedly underscored that the final settlement of the conflict is possible only by achieving a universal agreement between the Cypriot communities with the support of the international community, by considering each side`s positions and respecting the agreed negotiating and peacekeeping mechanisms.

Top Russian official stressed that it has never been said or is said that Russia would recognize the pseudo-state in occupied northern part of Cyprus.

Moreover, he said that the Russian foreign ministry is closely following the developments of the ongoing direct talks and is noting with satisfaction the results of the first round of the dialogue on the issues of Cyprus settlement.

Replying to a question related to the ongoing direct talks, he pointed out that although the sides still need to overcome not few substantial disagreements, it is important that during the first reading of all six chapters of the talks package, a mutual understanding on an entire series of difficult issues has been achieved.

We share the view expressed a few day ago by the UN Secretary General`s Special Envoy on Cyprus, Alexander Downer on the new steps between the leaders of the two communities achieved at the first meeting of the talks second round he added.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.
