    [02] FM - EUROPEAN ELECTIONS

Cyprus Foreign Minister Markos Kyprianou has made an appeal to Cypriot voters to proceed to polling stations and vote for the European Parliament elections.

Kyprianou, who was Cyprus first EU Commissioner, stressed the importance of European elections, not only for the EU but also for Cyprus and said that a large number of decisions are taken by the European institutions and the European Parliament is not an assembly but a legislative body which legislates and adopts laws which are directly and immediately applicable in Cyprus.

So it is important to have the greatest possible participation and to elect the best candidates, because this is just another level of legislation and a legislative body that directly affects the daily lives of the Cypriot people``, he said.
