  • [01] SPOKESMAN - UNFICYP RESOLUTION

Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou has expressed the governments satisfaction with the adoption of UN resolution 1873 for the renewal of UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP)`s mandate.

In statements, Stephanou stressed that it is very important the fact that the UN Security Council has reiterated and endorsed in the resolution the agreed basis for the comprehensive solution to the Cyprus Problem, which is a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation, with political equality as set out in the relevant Security Council resolutions.

The government of the Republic of Cyprus expresses its appreciation towards the Security Council for the approval of the 1873 resolution. The presence of the Peacekeeping Force, is necessary under the current circumstances and the presence of tens of thousands Turkish troops in Cyprus, he said and stressed that any change concerning the terms of the mandate should only be associated with finding a solution to the Cyprus problem.

Stephanou reiterated President Christofias commitment to continue negotiating with good will and with consistency according to the 1977 and 79 High Level Agreements, the UN relevant resolutions and the principles of international and European Law, and with an aim to find a mutually acceptable solution to the Cyprus problem that will reunite the territory, the people, the economy, and the institutions of the country, and will safeguard human rights as well as the fundamental freedoms for all the lawful citizens, Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, Maronites, Armenians and Latins.

Replying to a question, Stephanou pointed out that the government worked hard and with determination for the adoption of this specific resolution, which is balanced and satisfies our side.

    [02] DOWNER G/C & T/C ARTISTS - EXHIBITS

The Special Adviser of the Secretary General on Cyprus, Alexander Downer, will be the host of a new initiative to highlight the wealth of artistic expression on the island and the fruits of creative cooperation across the Cyprus divide.

According to a press release, Cypriot artists Andreas Charalambous, Osman Keten, Zehra Sonya and Pola Hadjipapa have agreed to exhibit part of their work inside the premises where direct talks between Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat are being held.

The paintings and mixed-media pieces on show touch on Cyprus-related-themes, such as the Cyprus coffee, shared Cypriot experiences, Nicosias urbanism and sexual exploitation of women. Their works will kick off a rolling exhibition, which has the support of both leaders.

Im a great believer in the power of art to soothe but also to provoke reflection, Downer said.

I think the works on display are a small indication of the tremendous potential of this island, and I am heartened by the collaborative nature of the exhibition, which is conceived and led by Turkish and Greek Cypriot artists, he added.

The exhibition will be inaugurated officially in July. Future contributing artists will include creators such as Emin Cizenel, Ashik Mene, Kyriakos Kallis and Chara Savvidou, who will provide new works on a monthly basis to lend artistic support to the peace-process.
