[01] LEADERS` MEETING POSTPONED

An UNFICYP press release says that the meeting, which was scheduled for 10:00, has been postponed and UNFICYP will inform of the new date when it is rescheduled.

The two leaders were due to resume talks on the property issue.

The meeting was postponed due to the death of Elsi Christofias father.

According to an official announcement, the cancellation of the meeting was decided following an understanding between Christofias and Talat.

The new meeting between the leaders of the two communities will take place next Wednesday, February 25.

[02] CoR PRESIDENT - CYPRUS

On Friday, Van Den Brande will be received by President of the Republic Demetris Christofias, and later on the whole delegation will meet Mayor of Nicosia Eleni Mavrou, who will accompany the members on a visit to Ledra Street and the ceasefire line.

Van Den Brande will give a press conference after the visit, followed by a ceremonial meeting of the Municipal Council, during which he will be awarded the Medal of the City of Nicosia.

On Friday afternoon, the delegation will be given a sightseeing tour and visit projects implemented with co-financing by the EU Structural Funds and within the framework of the bicommunal Nicosia Master Plan, followed by a presentation of the Master Plan and the Nicosia Sewerage Project by the bicommunal teams of professionals. In the evening, an official dinner will be hosted in honour of Van Den Brande.

[03] AHI - OBAMA - CYPRUS

AHI calls on President Obama to ask Turkey to demilitarize Cyprus, withdraw its 40,000 occupation troops illegally in Cyprus, return to Turkey the 180,000 illegal settlers/colonists from Turkey in violation of the Geneva Convention of 1949 and tear down the green line barbed-wire fence across the face of Cyprus which, together with Turkeys 40,000 occupation forces, is the cause of the alleged isolation of the Turkish Cypriots in the occupied northern part of Cyprus.

Moreover, AHI refers to the ongoing Cyprus talks which began in September 2008 between Cypriot President Demetris Christofiaas and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat and urges the US President to warn Turkish leaders not to manipulate the current talks or restrict Mr. Talat at the bargaining table.

Unless Mr. Talat is allowed to negotiate solely on behalf of the Turkish Cypriots, without the external pressures that are being placed on him by Turkey, there will be little chance for progress to be made, AHI notes.

[04] REHN - CYPRUS ISSUE

In a written reply he has given to Cypriot MEP Panayiotis Demetriou, Rehn stresses that the Commission is ready to contribute to the Cyprus process with its expertise on issues within its competence, when so requested by the negotiating parties and the UN.

Demetriou had asked the EU Commissioner about the Unions role and more active involvement in efforts to reach a solution of the Cyprus problem.

The EU has a strong desire to see the Cyprus problem solved. The Commission fully supports the efforts of the leaders of both communities in Cyprus to achieve a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus issue under United Nations (UN) auspices, Rehn notes.
