  • [01] PRESIDENT CHRISTOFIAS - SERBIA - VISIT

Cyprus President Demetris Christofias will pay an official visit to Serbia on February 23-24.

On Monday, President Christofias will have a half-hour tete a tete meeting with his Serbian counterpart Boris Tadic, followed by official talks.

According to an official press release, the talks will focus on deepening further existing excellent bilateral relations and on strengthening economic cooperation between the two countries. The talks will also cover the Cyprus problem, Serbia`s relations with the EU and other bilateral and international issues.

The talks between Tadic and Christofias will be followed by the singing of a number of Agreements and Memoranda of cooperation which will further consolidate the relations of friendship and cooperation between the two countries.

President Christofias will attend a working lunch hosted by Serbia`s Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic.

He will attend a ceremony for the opening of the new premises of the Cypriot embassy in Serbia and will meet President of the Serbian National Assembly Slavica Djukic Dejanovic.

On Tuesday, President Christofias and Tadic will address the opening of the Serbian-Cyprus Business Forum organised by the Serbian Chamber of Commerce and the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry, while later on he will give a lecture at the Faculty of Political Science of the University of Belgrade.

[02] IACOVOU - LIMNITIS CROSSING POINT

The Greek Cypriot side will continue to press on for the opening of the Limnitis crossing point, to facilitate movement to and from the islands northern Turkish occupied areas, Presidential Commissioner George Iacovou has said. He also pointed out that the Turkish Cypriot side has reneged on the agreement, reached between the two Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot sides in May last year.

Iacovou`s remarks came as a committee of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots for the opening of the crossing point appeared indignant and warned of drastic measures, including closing crossing points which operate along the ceasefire line, if there is no progress on the matter. The delegation met also UN Secretary-General`s Special Representative to Cyprus Taye-Brook Zerihoun and Iacovou to press on with their demand.

Speaking to the press after the meeting, Iacovou recalled that the opening of the Limnitis crossing point was mentioned in the joint communique issued after a meeting between President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat. ``We are ready to implement that decision taken by President Christofias and Talat. The Turkish Cypriot side essentially reneged on the agreement, since it demanded things which had nothing to do with crossing points and tabled various preconditions which have been deemed unacceptable,`` Iacovou stressed.

    [03] CYPRIOT PARTIES - MEETING

Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot political parties, which meet regularly in the UN-controlled buffer zone under the auspices of the Slovak embassy in here, have exchanged views on their vision for a solution to the Cyprus problem.

Ambassador of Slovakia Anna Tourenikova, reading out the joint communique issued at the end of the meeting, said the leaders and representatives of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot political parties expressed opinion on the issue Our vision for a solution to the Cyprus problem as proposed by the hosting party, the Greek Cypriot Democratic Party DEKO. They aspire to a bizonal, bicommunal Cyprus with political equality, as defined by the relevant resolutions of the UN, reached through negotiations of the two leaders, free of foreign influence, the statement read.

It will be the common home for its communities and it will serve as a model for the application of human rights and democratic principles and which will be an active member of the European family, it concluded. The next regular meeting of the leaders will be on 11 March at the Ledra Palace hotel.
