[01] UN ENVOY - BRITISH FOREIGN SECRETARY - CYPRUS QUESTIONUN Secretary General Special Envoy on Cyprus Alexander Downer updated Tuesday in London British Foreign Secretary David Miliband on the progress that has been made in direct talks between Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, aiming at reaching a settlement of the problem of Cyprus, divided since the Turkish invasion of 1974.A press release issued by the British High Commission in Cyprus said Downer and Miliband discussed the next steps including the plan to move on to the Property issue next week. Miliband said, ``I was pleased to meet Mr Downer today. I discussed with him the UK`s continued support for the process and reiterated our readiness to assist the UN`s efforts in support of the two leaders` search for a solution``. The press release said their discussion also covered confidence building measures including the issue of demining. The Foreign Secretary emphasised that the UK strongly supports the demining programme and intends to respond positively to the programme`s appeal for funding to maintain the de-mining activity. The Minister for Europe Caroline Flint will follow up on the issue as a matter of priority. President Christofias and Talat have been engaged in direct negotiations since early September last year. [02] EIB VICE-PRESIDENT - CYPRUSVice-President of the European Investment Bank (EIB) Ploutarchos Sakellaris will pay an official visit to Cyprus January 22 and 23, 2009.During his stay in Cyprus, Sakellaris will hold separate meeting with Finance Minister and other Ministers, during which an evaluation of the progress of the projects funded by the EIB will take place, and the financing of new development projects will be planned. [03] MINISTRY OF FINANCE - COMMISSION FORECASTThe European Commission`s extended interim forecast confirms the satisfying situation of Cyprus economy, a press release issued by Cyprus Ministry of Finance said, commenting on the Commissions forecast.As regards Cyprus, Commission said that economic activity remained strong in the first three quarters of 2008. However, due to the worsening external environment, GDP is expected to have decelerated in the last quarter of the year, which should lead to an annual growth rate of three and a half per cent. Economic growth is expected to slow down significantly in 2009, but still remain in positive territory, Commission estimates, pointing out that Cyprus will be one of the euro area three best performing countries in the areas of growth, unemployment and fiscal deficit.
