[01] CHRISTOFIAS - TALAT - TALKSPresident of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat are meeting in Nicosia on Tuesday, in the framework of direct negotiations held since early September under UN auspices.At their last meeting on Monday of last week, the two leaders talked about state independent institutions and issues regarding the Supreme Court. As Alexander Downer, UN Secretary Generals Special Adviser on Cyprus, has said at todays meeting the leaders are expected to discuss deadlock resolving mechanism. President Christofias and the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community have been engaged in direct talks since September this year, with a view to finding a negotiated settlement that will reunite Cyprus, which has been divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion. [02] CHRISTOFIAS TURKISH PROVOCATIONSCyprus President Demetris Christofias has stressed that the Republic of Cyprus will defend its sovereign rights decisively. Commenting on the harassment by a Turkish vessel of a Norwegian ship, which was searching for hydrocarbons in Cyprus` exclusive economic zone, President Christofias said that the government has denounced Turkeys provocative action and protested to the UN, the European Union and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council.Speaking before departing from the Presidential Palace for the UN controlled area of the now defunct Nicosia airport, for his meeting with the Turkish Cypriot leader, in the framework of direct negotiations, President Christofias said: We will continue protesting against Turkey as long as Ankara provokes. Asked if the Turkish action aims at raising obstacles at the direct talks, President Christofias said that everything was possible. We act on the basis of the Law of the Sea and the UN Conventions, he added. Asked if he will raise the issue at his tete-a-tete meeting with the Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, Christofias clarified that Talat is not responsible for the Turkish actions. Subsequently, Talat has no authority or any power to call for an end to this kind of provocative actions. This is a matter for Ankara, and that is why we appeal to the international community to take the necessary steps, Christofias pointed out. [03] SPOKESMAN - NATIONAL COUNCILThe members of the National Council, the top advisory body to the President on the handling of the Cyprus question, comprising parliamentary parties, have codified their working method. Speaking after a Council meeting on Monday, Government Spokesman Stephanos Stephanou said that President Demetris Christofias presented a specific proposal, having seriously taking into account the parties positions and recommendations.After that, a creative and constructive dialogue took place, which led to the codification of the role and the way the Council will operate, he said. Stephanou noted that the National Council is an advisory body to the President, it provides a forum for discussion and it serves as a decision making body on the Cyprus question. It comprises parliamentary parties, which are represented at the meetings by their presidents and one of their members. The former Presidents of the Republic of Cyprus and the House President, if he is not a leader of a political party, also participate in the meetings of the Council.
