[01] CHRISTOFIAS - CHILDREN`S RIGHTSPresident of the Republic Demetris Christofias said on Monday that progress had been made regarding the safeguarding of children`s rights, and assured that there would be no cuts in funds for the promotion of programmes for children.Speaking at an event organised at the Presidential Palace, to mark the Children`s Week, President Christofias said ``the issue is to find more funds in order to better respond to the demands`` of the children. The President said the government was a good listener and would make every effort to safeguard a good present and future for children, in cooperation with the Commissioner for the Protection of Children`s Rights and other organisations for children. He pointed out that since Cyprus` accession to the EU in 2004 much has been done in the direction of children`s rights, including steps to combat racism. President Christofias made a brief reference to the Cyprus problem and assured that ``we undertake, the people of Cyprus, I hope united, to defend the Republic of Cyprus, our state, which belongs to the Greek Cypriots and the Turkish Cypriots.`` Commissioner for the Protection of Children`s Rights Leda Koursoumba said that the government has been very positive and sincere in efforts to safeguard the children`s rights she had pointed out and expressed certainty that the cooperation would continue. She also pointed out the necessity to combat racism, noting that ``as a state we have the obligation to safeguard the rights of all children living in Cyprus.`` President of the Cypriot Children`s Parliament Maria Christodoulou presented the thoughts, concerns and proposals of the children for a quality life in the present and future, concerning the preparation of children for their future roles as parents, entertainment areas, schools with psychologist units, and extra programmes to combat the use of drugs. ``We are certain that the state and you personally will support us in our effort to reach our goals,`` she concluded. The event, which was attended, among others, by child MPs and children`s delegations from across the island, ended with songs by young children. [02] GAROYIAN - ANKARA - PRESSUREPresident of the House of Representatives Marios Garoyian has pointed out the need for the international community to exert pressure on Ankara, which holds the key to a solution of the Cyprus problem, noting that, despite the good will of the Greek Cypriot side, the Turkish Cypriot side, led by Ankara, insists on unacceptable positions.Speaking after a meeting with Croatian Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Gordan Jandrokovic, who is on an official visit to Cyprus, Garoyian said the Turkish positions are not in line with the initial agreement between President of the Republic Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat for a bizonal bicommunal federation, or with UN resolutions and EU principles and values. According to an official press release, Garoyian and Jandrokovic discussed bilateral relations, taking into consideration Cyprus` EU membership and Croatia`s status as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council. They also expressed their mutual will to further improve commercial relations and enhance exchanges in the tourism sector, as well as intensify the exchange of parliamentary visits and strengthen bilateral relations in general. The meeting was also addressed by President of the House of Representatives Marios Garogian and member of the Cypriot delegation at PACE and member of the Subcommittee on Human Rights, MP Christos Pourgourides.
