    [02] MILITARY ATTACHES - PARIS - MOSCOW

Costas Papacostas, Cypriot Minister of Defence, has had a meeting with the Republics newly appointed Military Attaches in Paris and Moscow.

According to an official press release, issued here today by the Ministry of Defence, Artillery Lieutenant Colonel Harris Georgiou and Wing-Commander Filokypros Yiannaki, will officially assume office at the embassies of the Republic of Cyprus in Paris and Moscow respectively, by the end of August 2008.

At the meeting on Friday, Papacostas wished them every success and asked them to work towards strengthening the excellent bilateral relations between Cyprus, France and Russia, especially on defence issues.

[03] LABOUR MINISTER - CYPRUS ISSUE

Labour and Social Insurance Minister Sotiroula Charalambous has stressed the need for unity and support for President Demetris Christofias in his efforts to find a negotiated settlement that will reunite Cyprus, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion. In a speech on Sunday at Xilotimbou village of Larnaca district to mark the annual memorial service of hero Zacharias Spyrou, killed during the invasion, Charlambous said it is clear that the road to a solution and the process which begins with the direct talks next month will be hard.

There are some points of convergence between the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot communities but there are also big differences. The President will count on our support, she said. Charalambous explained that the Greek Cypriot side is seeking a bizonal, bicommunal federal solution, which will secure human rights and respect European values. A United Federal Cyprus will have a single sovereignty, one international personality and citizenship and will provide for political equality for the two communities, as this is defined by the relevant UN Security Council resolutions, she added.

The Labour Minister called on the Turkish Cypriot side to participate in the talks with a constructive spirit, with a view to finding an honorable compromise which will put the interests of all Cypriots over and above anything else and will reunite the territory, the people and the countrys institutions. At the same time, she said, we expect Turkey to cooperate for a just, viable and functional solution to the Cyprus issue.

    [04] OLYMPICS - YOUTH CAMP

Around 409 children athletes, among them two Cypriots, are participating in the Beijing 2008 Olympic Youth Camp Programme. The children come from the 205 member countries and regions of the International Olympic Committee.

According to a press release, issue by the Cyprus Olympic Committee, the two young Cypriot athletes, Loukia Trikomitou (gymnastics) and Charis Koutras (athletics), said they were impressed by the Olympic Youth Camp Programme. The Programme aims at fostering exchanges and friendship between young people from various countries and educating them to understand and carry forward the Olympic spirit. Twenty of the children participated in the Olympic Torch Relay.

For the first time in the history of the Olympic Youth Camp, 50 young people with disabilities, from around the world, have been invited to participate in the activities of the Programme. Since the 1912 Stockholm Olympic Games, the Olympic Youth Camp Programme has been an educational and cultural exchange programme under the Olympic banner. Since the 1960s all Olympic Games have supported the initiative.
