  • [01] HELIOS AIR CRASH - RELATIVES OF VICTIMS

Relatives of victims of an air crash, three years ago, continue to demand justice and say that those responsible for the death of 121 people, on board an HELIOS airliner, must be punished. The relatives of the victims, most whom were Cypriots, have held a candle lit vigil in the central squares in Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaka, and Paralimni.

Speaking to CNA, the President of the Committee of Relatives of Victims Nicolas Yiasoumis said that almost three years after the crash at Grammatiko mountain, north of Athens, relatives and friends of the victims are organising this event with candle lighting to keep alive the memory of their loved ones. Unfortunately, three years after the air crash there is still the same slogan: 121 dead asking for justice, Yiasoumis said, adding that no more delays can be justified as time will exonerate those who are guilty of any responsibility.

On 14 August 2005, an Helios Airways Boeing 737, on its way to Prague via Athens, crashed into the mountain side north of the Greek capital, killing all 121 passengers and crew on board, most of them Cypriot holidaymakers. Two commissions of inquiry into the cause of the crash have issued their reports one in Greece which was made public and one in Cyprus whose findings are with the Attorney General. No charges have been brought against anybody so far. Relatives of the victims have however filed lawsuits against Helios, Boeing and the Civil Aviation Authority of the Republic of Cyprus.

    [02] CYPRIOT ATHLETES - OLYMPICS

Cypriot athletes are competing in various Olympic sports, setting themselves different goals for greater achievements.

Haris Papadopoulos began in sailing (Finn). At the end of the first day in Finn he finished at the 16th position in the overall ranking, and aims to be among the first top 10 or 12 in the sport. Natalia Hadjiloizou competed in swimming, 100m butterfly. Hadjiloizou finished 45th out of 49 athletes with 1.01.80, in the second preliminary competition. On Saturday, Elena Mousikou finished at the 56th position of a total of 64 athletes, in 70 m archery. She will continue to the knock out round where she will contest Japanese Nami Hakayama, number 9 in the overall ranking.

Today two more Cypriot athletes will compete in sailing at Qingdao Olympic Sailing center, Andreas Cariolou and Gabriela Chatzidamianou. Both athletes participate for the second time at Olympic Games. The first time was four years ago in Athens. Cariolou is number 30 in the world ranking and 13th in the Athens Olympic Games. Chatzidamianou was 21st in Athens and number 59 this year in the world ranking. Cypriot swimming champion Anna Stylianou has her debut on Sunday. She will compete in 200 m freestyle at the National Aquatic Center in Beijing. This is her first participation in Olympic Games at the age of 22.

The Cypriot Olympic team comprises 17 athletes, competing in various sports such as skeet, mens high jump, track, javelin, pole vault, windsurfing, sailing (laser) sailing (Finn), swimming, mens weightlifting and archery.
