    The head of the Roman Catholic Church Pope Benedict XVI and the primate of the Greek Orthodox Church of Cyprus Archbishop Chrysostomos II have agreed that the plundering of ones religious sites and places of worship is a crime against humanity.

    In a joint declaration, issued after their meeting at the Holy See, they expressed their will to play a peaceful role and help alleviate the suffering of mankind, especially in their respective regions.

    They stressed that the pillage, the destruction and the plundering of places of worship, of each and every religion, is a crime against humanity and civilization.

    The two religious heads reviewed the situation in Cyprus and the Middle East and called on everybody to lay down their arms and restore every kind of injustice, pointing out the need to respect the human rights of each nation.

    We consider the freedom of religion to be the first such human right, the declaration added.

    They also expressed their willingness to engage in an honorable dialogue among the religions of the region.

    Archbishop Chrysostomos has extended an invitation to the Pope to visit Cyprus.

    Chrysostomos discussed with the Pope the destruction of more than 500 churches in Cyprus` Turkish occupied areas in the north of the country and sought his assistance in efforts to try and restore them.

    [02] EUROSTAT - TRADE BALANCE - CYPRUS

    Cyprus trade balance showed a deficit of 1.1 billion euro during the period January to March 2007, according to figures published by the European Union statistical office, Eurostat. Eurostat said that Cyprus total exports during the first three months of 2007 amounted to 0.3 billion euro, showing a reduction of 14% compared to the respective period last year. Total imports increased by 1%, reaching 1.3 billion euro.

    As regards the EU27, the first estimate for the euro area trade balance with the rest of the world in April 2007 gave a 1.8 billion euro surplus, compared with -2.7 in April 2006. The March 2007 balance was +7.6 billion euro, compared with +0.4 billion in March 2006. In April 2007, compared with March 2007, seasonally adjusted exports rose by 0.6% and imports by 2.2%.

    The first estimate for April 2007 extra-EU271 trade was a deficit of 14.4 bn euro, compared with -16.5 bn in April 2006. In March 2007, the balance was -10.5 bn, compared with -13.7 bn in March 2006. In April 2007, compared with March 2007, seasonally adjusted exports fell by 1.7%, while imports rose by 0.1%.

    [03] ROMANIAN SENATE - CYPRUS VISIT

    President of the Romanian Senate arrives in Cyprus for an official visit, heading a multi-member delegation, at the invitation of House President Demetris Christofias. During the visit, the delegation will be received by Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos and will hold separate meetings with Christofias, Finance Minister Michalis Sarris and the Chairman of the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry Manthos Mavrommatis.

    The Romanian parliamentarians will also attend an official dinner to be hosted by Christofias.

    President of the Cyprus House Foreign Affairs Committee and President of the Cyprus Romania Parliamentary Friendship Group Averof Neophyotou and President of the Cyprus House European Affairs Committee Nicos Kleanthous will host a joint working lunch for the Romanian delegation.
