[01] CYPRUS GOVERNMENT - UNFICYP RESOLUTIONThe government has said it was satisfied with the adoption by a UN Security Council resolution, which renews for a further six-month period the mandate of the UN Peace-Keeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP).In a written statement, Government Spokesman Vassilis Palmas said that the Government of the Republic of Cyprus expresses its satisfaction with the adoption of the resolution, which reiterates the firm adherence of the United Nations to the principles and decisions of the July 8 Agreement. We reiterate once again our steady adherence to and readiness to implement fully the July 8 Agreement and we call on the Turkish Cypriot side to fully cooperate in order to achieve, in practice, prospects for progress towards a settlement of the Cyprus question through the exact implementation of the July 8 Agreement, the spokesman added. Furthermore he said that we note with satisfaction the fact that the Security Council, once again, did not adopt the allegation for the so-called isolation of the Turkish Cypriots, which, as it is known, to the extent that it applies, is due to the military invasion and the ongoing illegal occupation of a considerable percentage of Cypriot territory by Turkey. On July 8 2006, Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos and the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community Mehmet Ali Talat reached an agreement, under UN auspices, providing for the concurrent establishment of working groups to address substantive aspects of the Cyprus problem and technical committees to deal with the day-to-day problems that affect the people, as well as Confidence Building Measures. Cyprus, an EU member state since May 1 2004, has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. [02] UN - RESOLUTION - UNFICYPThe UN Security Council has renewed for a further six-month period the mandate of the UN Peace-Keeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP).The Security Council reaffirms that the status quo in Cyprus is unacceptable, that the time is not on the side of a settlement and that negotiations on a final political solution of the Cyprus problem have been at an impasse for too long. The Council expresses full support of the 8 July process, notes with concern the lack of progress and calls upon all parties involved to immediately engage constructively with the UNs efforts to demonstrate measurable progress in order to allow fully-fledged negotiations to begin, and cease mutual recriminations.
