  • [01] PRESIDENT PAPADOPOULOS - CYPRUS QUESTION

Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos said Saturday that he did not think that the appointment of a new UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs would make a new step for the Cyprus issue more difficult, adding that the July 8 agreement provides clearly the way forward.

Papadopoulos statement came one day after American Lynn Pascoe was appointed Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs, succeeding Ibrahim Gambari, who was present at a meeting here on July 8th 2006, during which President Papadopoulos and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat agreed to begin a process of bicommunal discussions on issues that affect the day-to-day life of the people and concurrently those that concern substantive issues, both contributing to a comprehensive settlement to the Cyprus problem.

Papadopoulos recalled the July 8 agreement, which as he said, explicitly determines how meetings will take place, when meetings between the leaders shall take place and what the preconditions to have such meetings are.

He added that one of the basic provisions of Gambaris letter to the two leaders is that the discussion of core issues will lead to a new basis for a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus question.

Asked about Frinday`s meeting between the UN SG Ban Ki-moon and Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul, Papadopoulos said that the government has been informed in general about the meeting.

[02] UNSG - TURKISH FM - CYPRUS QUESTION

The Cyprus problem was among the issues discussed during a meeting Friday between the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul, who was paying a visit to the US.

According to a statement read out by a UN Spokesperson, on Cyprus, Ban and Gul ``agreed that the 8 July 2006 agreement between the two sides must be implemented without further delay.``

    [03] SPOKESMAN - ILLEGAL AIRPORT

Civil Aviation departments all over the world, should be aware of the fact that the airport in the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus is illegal, using an illegal code number, said Government Spokesman Christodoulos Pashiardes.

Pashiardes said all tourist agencies abroad should know and do know that the airport is illegal.

He noted that ``the fact that the illegal airport at the Turkish occupied village of Tymbou uses an illegal code, does not legalize this airport. The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) is aware of the code and at the same time it has in mind that the particular airport is illegal.

    [04] CYPRIOT - UEFA - TREASURER

Cypriot Marios Lefkaritis has been elected UEFA`s treasurer, during UEFA`s executive committee meeting in Nyon, Switzerland.

Lefkaritis was also appointed member of the FIFA Executive Committee.
