  • [01] PRESIDENT PAPADOPOULOS - CYPRUS QUESTION

Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos said Saturday that he did not think that the appointment of a new UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs would make a new step for the Cyprus issue more difficult, adding that the July 8 agreement provides clearly the way forward.

Papadopoulos statement came one day after American Lynn Pascoe was appointed Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs, succeeding Ibrahim Gambari, who was present at a meeting here on July 8th 2006, during which President Papadopoulos and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat agreed to begin a process of bicommunal discussions on issues that affect the day-to-day life of the people and concurrently those that concern substantive issues, both contributing to a comprehensive settlement to the Cyprus problem.

The UN has continuity. And nevertheless it is not sure whether Mr. Gambari will no involvement to the Cyprus question in the framework of his new duties``, the President said responding to questions.

Papadopoulos recalled the July 8 agreement, which as he said, explicitly determines how meetings will take place, when meetings between the leaders shall take place and what the preconditions to have such meetings are.

He added that one of the basic provisions of Gambaris letter to the two leaders is that the discussion of core issues will lead to a new basis for a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus question.

Asked about Frinday`s meeting between the UN SG Ban Ki-moon and Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul, Papadopoulos said that the government has been informed in general about the meeting.

Invited to comment press reports saying that Gul asked from Ban to continue the policy of his predecessor, Kofi Annan, Papadopoulos observed that this is not a new position by Turkey.

``It exists since 2004, and it is repeated from time to time,`` he said, adding that ``it was even stated in Cyprus that Turkey will not accept any arrangement that will dispossess the advantages - what they call rights - provided by the Annan plan. So this is an ordinary demand.``

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.
