  • [01] EU - LATIN AMERICA SUMMIT

What has been described as the biggest and most important summit in the history of postwar Austria is taking place today and tomorrow in Vienna, with the participation of more than 60 heads of state and government of European Union, Latin American and Caribbean countries.

Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos and Foreign Minister George Iacovou arrived yesterday in the Austrian capital to attend the fourth EU - Latin America/Caribbean Summit.

Last night, the Austrian presidency hosted an official dinner at Hofburg Palace for all heads of state and government and all Foreign Ministers. The dinner was also attended by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and Turkish Premier Recep Tayip Erdogan.

President Papadopoulos is expected to confer with his EU and Latin America counterparts on the sidelines of the summit. Today he is scheduled to meet with Greek Premier Kostas Karamanlis.

The Summit will be addressed by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan. The agenda includes several issues such as Democracy and Human Rights, Combat of Terrorism, Drugs and Organized Crime, Employment and Migration, as well as environment and energy matters.

Parallel to the Summit, Austria is also organizing the first EU - Latin America and Caribbean Business Summit with representatives of the business communities from the two regions who will discuss trade relations, investment, services and business opportunities.

[02] ECUMENICAL PATRIARCH - PAFOS BISHOP

The head of the Greek Orthodox Church, the Ecumenical Patriarch Vartholomeos, has assured the acting primate of the Church of Cyprus, bishop of Pafos Chrysostomos, that next weeks meeting of senior clergy will only discuss the replacement or not of the ailing Cyprus Archbishop.

The one and only issue that will be on the agenda of the meeting next week in Switzerland is whether we should go ahead with elections for a new Árchbishop, due to the long illness of Archbishop Chrysostomos, Pafos bishop said after his meeting with the Patriarch, Thursday, at Fanari (the seat of the Patriarch).

The bishop also said that the Patriarch explained that the church of Cyprus will solve any other problems that may arise with regard to this issue
