    Cyprus Police rescue five Italians after yacht sinks

    Nicosia, Sep 28 (CNA) -- A yacht under the Italian flag sank one mile off Episkopi Gulf, near the southern coastal town of Limassol, Tuesday night.

    A Police spokesman has told CNA that people aboard the vessel sent an SOS and a Cyprus coastal police patrol boat went to the area and rescued five Italians, who were on a life-saving raft and took them to the headquarters of the coastal police.

    Greek Aegean Minister to visit Cyprus

    Nicosia, Sep 28 (CNA) -- Greek Minister of the Aegean and Island Policy Aristotelis Pavlides will pay a visit to Cyprus September 29 - October 1, during which he will be received by Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos.

    A press release issued by the embassy of Greece in Cyprus said Pavlides will also meet Foreign Minister George Iacovou and Finance Minister Michael Sarris.

    Athens Mayor and Chinese FM discuss Cyprus problem

    Athens, Sep 28 (CNA) -- Developments in the Cyprus question and prospects for a settlement were discussed during a meeting in Beijing between the Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing and the Mayor of Athens Dora Bakoyianni.

    Asked if China could examine soon at the UN Security Council a new initiative on Cyprus, the Chinese Foreign Minister reiterated that China always respects the Security Council's relevant decisions and assured that his country will continue to play a constructive role on this issue.

    Cyprus government aims at full satisfaction of travelers

    Nicosia, Sep 28 (CNA) -- Cyprus Commerce, Industry and Tourism Minister George Lillikas has said the government aims to satisfy fully travelers to the island, ensure good organisation of the tourist product and upgrade the services offered, adding that improved domestic infrastructure would help towards this goal.

    Speaking at a dinner hosted by the Cyprus Tourism Organisation on the occasion of the World Tourism Day 2005, attended by Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos, Lillikas announced that a new package of measures for tourism will be announced in October which can be applied by the business world.

    Cyprus launches Programme of Help to Palestinians

    Nicosia, Sep 28 (CNA) -- The Foreign Ministry has announced the launch of a Programme of Help to the Palestinian Authority, with the arrival in Cyprus on September 30 of 21 Palestinian senior police officers, who will attend a training seminar at the Police Academy for four weeks.

    The Programme of Help, approved by the Cabinet in August 2005, will continue in November with another training seminar for other 21 Palestinian senior police officers and in December with a training seminar for 21 Palestinian senior civil servants.

    Europarliament says Turkey must recognise Cyprus, Armenian genocide

    Strasbourg, Sept 28 (CNA) The European Parliament backed Wednesday the opening of EU entry talks with Turkey next week, but insisted that Ankara recognise Cyprus and the genocide of Armenians during the negotiations.

    The European Parliament has also postponed a vote to ratify Turkey's extended customs union with the EU with 311 votes in favour, 285 against and 63 abstentions. The delay was demanded by the European People's Party (EPP), the biggest party in the EU parliament, due to Ankara's refusal to let Cypriot ships and planes use its ports and airports, as required under the extended customs deal.

    Nicosia, Sept 28 (CNA) Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides has described an auction in Britain of property belonging to Greek Cypriots in the Turkish occupied north of the island as an ''illegal procedure which, clearly contradicts any definition of property as recognized by the European Court of Human Rights''.
