    Cyprus to celebrate Independence Day

    Nicosia, Sept 27 (CNA) Cyprus will celebrate the 45th anniversary of its independence on Saturday with a grand military parade that will take place in Nicosia.

    Participating during the 1st October parade will be infantry and artillery forces and members of the Greek military contingent stationed in Cyprus in accordance with the 1960 Treaty of Establishment of the Republic, the police, the fire brigade, the forestry and the civil defence.

    Shipping Council to work until Turkish ban on Cyprus ships is lifted

    Limassol, Sept 27 (CNA) The Cyprus Shipping Council will not stop until the Turkish ban to the entry of ships connected with Cyprus into Turkish ports is completely lifted, said here Tuesday its President Andreas Droussiotis.

    In a speech during the Maritime Cyprus 2005 conference in this southern coastal town, Droussiotis said the no. 1 problem which has affected Cyprus shipping since 1987, is the Turkish ban to the entry of ships connected to Cyprus into Turkish ports, noting that these include Cyprus flag, as well as any vessel regardless of flag, which has a corporate relation with Cyprus.

    Cyprus Finance Minister attends World Bank and IMF meetings

    Nicosia, Sept 27 (CNA) Finance Minister Michalis Sarris said Cyprus, aiming towards its continued economic and social development, is proceeding with its commitments to the EU with special emphasis in its macroeconomic stability, the purification of its public finances and to promote the necessary structural changes.

    Sarris made the statement during the deliberations of the annual meeting of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund in Washington.

    British MP asks Straw for meeting on Cyprus

    London, Sept 27 (CNA) - Labour MP Eddie O Hara has asked British Secretary of State Jack Straw for a meeting to discuss ways in which Britain can help resolve the Cyprus issue.

    In a statement to CNA after a fringe meeting on Cyprus, during the Labour Party conference in Brighton, O' Hara said that he has written to Foreign and Commonwealth Secretary Jack Straw asking for a meeting to discuss ways in which Britain can help resolve the Cyprus issue.
