Armenians submit candidacies for by-election

Nicosia, Sep 26 (CNA) Three members of the Armenian religious group have submitted their candidacies today for the post of new representative of the Armenian religious group to the House of Representatives that will take place 9 October 2005.

The new representative will succeed Bedros Kalaydjian, who passed away on 1st September at the age of 71.

Vahakn Atamyan, Antranig Ashdjian and Parsegh Zartarian submitted their candidacies to Chief Returning Officer Lazaros Savvides who said that around 1,950 Armenians are eligible to vote in the by-election.

Cyprus & Greece financially contribute to CMP

Nicosia, Sep 26 (CNA) The governments of Cyprus and Greece are responding to an appeal by the Committee for Missing Persons (CMP) and will financially contribute to efforts to ascertain the fate of the missing of Cyprus.

According to an official statement, the Cypriot government has decided to give 60 thousand pounds (around 120 thousand US dollars) as a contribution to financing the exhumation and identification of the remains of the missing and the establishment and operation of a scientific anthropological laboratory.

The Greek government has also pledged to give 86 thousand Euro at a first stage to help efforts to ascertain the fate of the missing.

Violation of Turkeys obligations concerns EU, says Cypriot spokesman

Nicosia, Sep 26 (CNA) Turkeys obligation to implement the customs union protocol is a collective obligation against the EU and the violation of its obligations does not concern solely Cyprus, said today Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides.

Invited to comment on statements made by Turkeys Minister of State, responsible for Cyprus affairs, Abdullatif Sener that his country will not open airports or ports to Cyprus, the Spokesman underlined that there is a clear provision in the EU counterstatement to Turkeys declaration that it does not recognise the Republic of Cyprus, that Turkey is obliged to implement its customs union and its non-implementation will affect its accession negotiations.

President of European Parliament to visit Cyprus

Nicosia, Sep 26 (CNA) --- President of the European Parliament Josep Borrell Fontelles will visit Cyprus 3 - 9 October, 2005.

According to the preliminary program of his visit here, Borrell will be received by President of the Republic Tassos Papadopoulos and will meet with President of the House of Representatives Demetris Christofias. He will also hold meetings, among others, with Minister of Foreign Affairs George Iacovou and political leaders.

EU says Turkeys commitments key element for taking decisions on talks

Brussels, Sep 26 (CNA) The monitoring of Turkeys commitments will be a key element for taking the necessary decisions on the conduct of negotiations with the country, said a draft political EU declaration that will presented on 3 October by the British Presidency to Turkey.

According to diplomatic sources, the draft is expected to be approved this week at the COREPER meeting together with the negotiating framework and will refer to the Greco--Turkish relations, satisfying Athens objectives.
