    Weather forecast for Cyprus

    Nicosia, Sep 26 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    On Tuesday (September 27) and Wednesday (September 28), the weather will be mainly fine with some local clouds in the afternoon, winds becoming gentle to moderate southwesterly to westerly, 3BF to 4BF during the day. In the afternoons, winds are expected at times fresh up to 5BF over the south coastal areas.

    Temperatures will reach 32 to 17 degrees Centigrade inland, 30 to 18 degrees east and south coasts, 30 to 18 degrees over the west coasts and 23 to 11 degrees over Prodromos.

    On Thursday (September 29) the weather will be fine but cloud will form gradually with a chance of local showers mainly inland over the mountains. Small falls in temperature.

    Friday (September 30) weather will be mainly fine, no significant change for the temperature.

    Sea temperature: 25C

    Maritime Cyprus 2005 opens

    Limassol, Sep 26 (CNA) Promoting EU shipping is a major strategic objective of the EU maritime policy, said here Monday Vice President of the European Commission, responsible for Transport Jacques Barrot, addressing the Maritime Cyprus 2005 Conference.

    The ninth biennial international conference held in the southern coastal town of Limassol, began today with the participation of 750 delegates from 30 countries. It was opened by Communications and Works Minister Haris Thrasou, who assured that the government of Cyprus is determined and committed to the continuous improvement of the maritime infrastructure and the services rendered to the shipping community.

    Barrot: Turkeys EU talks cannot end if free transport of goods not resolved

    Limassol, Sep 26 (CNA) European Commission Vice President and EU Transport Commissioner Jacques Barrot told Turkey today that its accession negotiations cannot be concluded with the EU unless the problem of free transport of goods is resolved.

    Barrot was speaking during a press conference with Cypriot Communications and Works Minister Haris Thrasou on the sidelines of the Maritime Cyprus 2005 Shipping conference in the southern coastal town of Limassol. The conference, which ends on 28 September, is entitled Shipping: What lies ahead? A Three Piece Puzzle.

    Thrasou told reporters that Barrot assured him the Commission will do everything possible to lift Turkeys restrictive measures against Cypriot flagged ships.

    Cypriot leadership congratulates Greece over Eurobasket victory

    Nicosia, Sep 26 (CNA) Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos has sent today a message to Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis congratulating the Greek national team for clinching the 34th European men's basketball championship last night.

    Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides expressed the hope that the victories will continue adding that this was a period of continued victories for Greek teams at various levels.
