President says recognition of Cyprus by Turkey ''serious issue''

    by Apostolis Zoupaniotis

New York, Sep 14 (CNA) - The recognition of the Republic of Cyprus by Turkey constitutes a ''very serious'' issue, Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos said here Wednesday, stressing that the existence of the Republic of Cyprus did not depend on the Turkish recognition.

Commenting on the European Union's Committee of Permanent Representatives (COREPER) failure to reach consensus on a draft counterstatement to Ankara's declaration that Turkey does not recognise the Republic of Cyprus, President Papadopoulos noted that ''this is not something new,'' adding that ''we determined which are the values and the points we wanted to be included (in the counterstatement) from the very beginning.''
