Cypriot President: Ready for carefully prepared negotiations on Cyprus

United Nations, Sep 14 (CNA) ---- The Greek Cypriot side is ready to proceed to negotiations for a settlement of the Cyprus issue, provided that they are carefully prepared, Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos stressed during a working lunch he hosted Tuesday for the Permanent Representatives of the UN Security Council five permanent members.

According to diplomatic sources, during the working lunch, the Cypriot President elaborated on the estimations of the Greek Cypriot side regarding the present stage of the Cyprus problem, noting that the Greek Cypriot side has already submitted its positions to UN Secretary General's envoy, Sir Kieran Prendergast, and is ready to proceed to negotiations that have been carefully prepared.

The discussion was held in a positive climate and President Papadopoulos replied to all questions addressed to him by the five permanent representatives.

United Nations, Sep 14 (CNA) -- The Cyprus question was among the issues discussed at a meeting held here Tuesday between Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis and UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.

According to well informed sources Karamanlis stressed that Greece supports the UN Secretary General's good offices, noting that any new initiative for a settlement of the Cyprus issue, should be carefully prepared, so that a new breakdown is prevented.

A UN Secretary General's spokesman said that Annan reassured Greek Premier that his good offices are at the disposal of both sides in Cyprus.

Cyprus Central Bank Governor to attend ECB 33rd meeting in Frankfurt

Nicosia, Sep 14 (CNA) --- Governor of the Central Bank of Cyprus Christodoulos Christodoulou left today for Frankfurt, to participate at the 33rd meeting of the European Central Bank General Council, to be held tomorrow.

During the meeting, participants will review the monetary, fiscal and other economic developments in the European Union member states, a Central Bank press release said.

Commissioner Kyprianou to pay official visit to Cyprus

Nicosia, Sep 14 (CNA) --- Cypriot European Union Commissioner for Health and Consumer Protection Markos Kyprianou will pay an official visit to Cyprus September 15-16.

During his visit, Kyprianou will hold meetings with Cypriot Ministers and will present the ''Europa Diary'', which is an EU-wide effort to inform young people of their rights, increase their awareness and enable them to make more informed decisions as consumers.

Government rejects Turkish PM's remarks on Cyprus

Nicosia, Sep 14 (CNA) - Cypriot Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides rejected today statements made yesterday by Turkish Prime Minister Rejep Tayyip Erdogan that the Greek Cypriot side is intransigent on the Cyprus problem.

Speaking during a daily press briefing, Chrysostomides stressed that the key to the solution of the Cyprus problem is the withdrawal of Turkish troops occupying Cyprus' northern third since the 1974 Turkish invasion and called on Turkey to follow the example of the Israeli occupying forces, which withdrew from the Gaza Strip.

Nicosia, Sep 14 (CNA) - The Cypriot government seeks improvements on the European Union's draft counterstatement to Ankara's declaration that it does not recognise the Republic of Cyprus, Cypriot Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said here Wednesday in view of the EU Committee of Permanent Representatives (COREPER) meeting, which convened to discuss the draft counterstatement presented by the British Presidency.

Chrysostomides said that both Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos and Minister of Foreign Affairs George Iacovou, in New York to attend the UN Millennium Summit and the General Assembly, are closely following the developments in the EU and are in constant touch with the Cypriot Permanent Representative in Brussels.

Limassol, Sep 14 (CNA) - Cyprus Port Authority (CPA) Chairman Chrysis Prenzas called for action against the Turkish insistence to impose an embargo on ships flying the Cypriot flag or ships that have Cyprus ports as their last call, noting that such actions constitute serious obstacles to free trade within the EU.

Prenzas was addressing a TAIEX three-day seminar entitled ''Motorways of the Sea in the Mediterranean'' with the cooperation of the European Commission's Directorate General on transport policy and with the participation of the competent authorities from Cyprus, Malta, Slovenia and Croatia.

Cyprus announces policy to attract foreign investments

Nicosia, Sep 14 (CNA) -- Cypriot Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism George Lillikas announced here Wednesday the government's policy aiming to establish Cyprus as a services bridge between the Middle East and the European Union.

Speaking at a press conference, Lillikas said that the Cypriot policy to attract foreign investors is based on three axles, namely the creation of a Cyprus Investment Promotion Agency (CYPA), a non-profit organisation with the state as its sole shareholder, which would promote Cyprus as a business and investment centre, the acceleration of the procedures for the implementation of foreign investments and a modern promotion strategy that corresponds to the most effective communication methods.

Nicosia, Sept 14 (CNA) - The Council of Europe's European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI) will prepare by next Spring a report on Racism and Intolerance in Cyprus.

An ECRI delegation headed by Alenca Puhar, raporteur for Cyprus, is visiting the island to meet with government officials, non governmental organisations and others to discuss issues relating to the fields of racism and intolerance with a view to prepare a report on Cyprus.

No COREPER consensus yet on counterstatement for Turkey

Brussels, Sep 14 (CNA) - The European Union's Permanent Representatives Committee (COREPER) failed today to reach consensus on a draft counterstatement to Ankara's declaration that it does not recognise the Republic of Cyprus.

Today's long discussion is considered to have created the conditions for a consensus in a new COREPER meeting within the next few days. The meeting was held in Brussels amidst press reports that the British presidency and France reached consensus on a draft counterstatement.
