Cyprus government: French Premier's statement ''particularly positive''

Nicosia, Aug 2 (CNA) Cypriot Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides described as ''particularly positive'' a statement by French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin that it doesn't seem conceivable that a negotiation process of whatever kind can start with a country that does not recognise all EU members.

Commenting on the statement referring to Turkey's bid to start accession talks, Chrysostomides said ''we have always stated that it is inconceivable for a country that wants to accede into the EU not to recognise a full EU member state.''

Spokesman: Cyprus Government welcomes meetings under UN auspices

Nicosia, Aug 2 (CNA) Every meeting, which has a social nature, is useful but under no circumstances it can substitute any meeting within the framework of the UN procedure to promote efforts to solve the Cyprus problem, said here Tuesday Cyprus Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides.

The Spokesman was invited to comment on a report in the Turkish Cypriot daily Kibris which said that House President Demetris Christofias intends to invite President of the Republic Tassos Papadopoulos, Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, so called prime minister Ferdi Sabit Soyer and other politicians to his country residence at Kellaki village, Limassol district. Chrysostomides said he had no information on such issue.

    1955:CYPPRESS:09

Recognition of Cyprus not a prerequisite for Turkey, says Commission

Nicosia, Aug 2 (CNA) The recognition of the Republic of Cyprus by Turkey should be settled in the framework of the United Nations, said today the European Commission and is not a prerequisite for Turkey to begin accession negotiations with the EU, as France had asserted on Tuesday.

In another development, Greece said that the non-recognition of the Republic of Cyprus, an EU member state, by Turkey, is a European absurdity.

Commission Spokesman Amadeu Altafaj said that with the signing of the protocol by Turkey whereby it extended its customs union agreement with the EU to all new EU member states including Cyprus, Ankara recognises that the EU is made up of 25 member states.
