House adjourns debate on European Constitution after bomb threat

Nicosia, Jun 30 (CNA) -- The Cyprus House of Representatives had to adjourn its two-day debate on the European Constitution after a telephone threat for a bomb explosion.

House President Demetris Christofias interrupted an MP's speech to announce that the MPs and the staff had to evacuate the building to allow Police bomb experts to search the building.

"There was a telephone call for a possible bomb explosion", said Cristofias.

He said the debate will continue at 1500 hours local today (1200 GMT). The MPs will be invited to vote in favour or against the European Constitution this evening.

Bomb threat in Cyprus House building a farce

Nicosia, Jun 30 (CNA) -- The police wrapped up its investigations on the premises of the House of Representatives, after an anonymous telephone threat for a bomb explosion, without finding any suspicious device.

The debate will continue at 1500 hours local time (1200 GMT). The MPs will be invited to vote in favour or against the European Constitution this evening.

Weather forecast for Cyprus

Nicosia, Jun 30 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

On Friday (July 1) and Saturday (July 2) the weather will be fine and mainly clear, although local mist and low clouds are expected overnight.

Mainly southwesterly to westerly breezes will prevail, gentle to moderate at first, but generally moderate in the afternoon, although fresh to strong southwesterly winds are expected over the south coast. Gentle katabatic winds will be blowing later in the night.

The state of the sea will be generally slight overnight and during the morning time, but generally slight to moderate in the afternoon. A moderate state of sea is expected over the south coast late in the afternoon.

Maximum temperatures will reach 36 to 38 degrees Centigrade inland, 32 to 33 degrees over the east and south coasts, 28 to 29 degrees over the west and north coasts, and 26 to 27 degrees Centigrade over Prodromos.

On Sunday (July 3) and Monday (July 4), no significant change is expected.

CMP agrees on principles for DNA identification

Nicosia, Jun 30 (CNA) - The Committee on Missing Persons in Cyprus (CMP) held its 403rd formal meeting today and agreed on the principles for the project in connection with the DNA identification of remains of both Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriots, to be exhumed on the island.

According to a CMP press release, the necessary mechanisms will be set up without delay.

Cyprus satisfied with Turkey's negotiating framework

Nicosia, Jun 30 (CNA) - The Cypriot government is satisfied with the draft negotiating framework for Turkey's European Union accession talks, agreed yesterday in Brussels, Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said today.

He noted that the draft was in line with the European Council conclusions of 17 December 2004, which were confirmed by the Council on 17 June 2005. The draft, he added, was positive in that it gave further details on the negotiating framework.

Nicosia, Jun 30 (CNA) - Cypriot Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said today that Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat was following ''a policy of detachment from a solution of the Cyprus problem,'' noting it was intriguing that Talat was asking for something in exchange of European Union financial aid.

Commenting on a letter Talat sent to Luxembourg's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chrysostomides expressed regret over the fact that, due to developments in Brussels, the Turkish Cypriots could lose EU financial aid, and called on the Turkish Cypriot side to focus on the actual interests of the Turkish Cypriots, as UN Undersecretary General Sir Kieran Prendergast has pointed out.

Cypriot House adopts resolution on British Bases

Nicosia, Jun 30 (CNA) - The Cypriot House of Representatives unanimously adopted a resolution today on the status of the British Bases in Cyprus, pointing out that they must not be used by the British for offensive purposes and calling on Britain to fulfill its financial obligations to the Republic of Cyprus and respect the rights of the Cypriots living within the Bases' areas.

In its resolution, the House ''declares that the United Kingdom has no sovereignty over the territory of the British Bases, even in the context of the Treaty of Establishment, but a commitment to merely use this territory for specific military purposes.''

Nicosia, 30 Jun (CNA) -- Seven political parties represented in the 56-member Cyprus House of Representatives voted for the European Constitution this evening, while the government's main partner, leftwing AKEL, stood against.

The one-seat Ecologists Environmentalists Movement abstained from the vote, at the House plenary, held after a two-day debate on a bill to ratify the EU Constitution.

Government coalition parties, centre-right Democratic Party and Social Democratic Movement EDEK, backed by the main opposition rightwing Democratic Rally, and the European Party, United Democrats, European Democracy Party and Struggling Democratic Movement voted in favour the European Constitution.

MPs present at the plenary session of the House voted as follows: 30 in favour, 19 against, 1 abstention.

Cypriot government satisfied with ratification of EU Constitution

Nicosia, Jun 30 (CNA) - Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs George Iacovou said this was ''a very big day for Cyprus and a very important day for Europe,'' and expressed the satisfaction of the government of the Republic over the ratifying of the European Constitutional Treaty by the House of Representatives.

Asked if the government had ''two voices'' and if the Ministers from leftwing AKEL in the coalition disagreed with the rest of the Cabinet, which was in favour of the Treaty, Iacovou said ''the government is one, it is the government of President Tassos Papadopoulos and is expressed with one voice, the voice of the President and the Council of Ministers.''
