Day one of House debate on European Constitution concludes

Nicosia, Jun 29 (CNA) -- The first round of a debate at the House of Representatives plenary on a bill to ratify the European Constitution ended on a positive note, with all speakers but one (the representative of the coalition left wing AKEL) saying they would approve the bill and one (from the Environmentalists) declaring abstention.

Cypriot parliamentarians talked about the pros and cons of the Constitution for over three hours and will continue their debate on Thursday, to conclude with a vote.

Cyprus would be the first European Union member state to ratify the Constitution after the failure of EU leaders to approve it at their June summit, nearly two weeks ago.

Many speakers said they believed that provisions in the European Constitution could help find a political settlement in Cyprus, consistent with the EU principles of justice, freedom and respect for human rights, pointing out that Turkey, in its bid to join the Union, would also be asked to align its policies and attitude with the Constitution.
