    Weather forecast for Cyprus

    Nicosia, Jun 2 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    Friday and Saturday: 03/06/2005 - 04/06/2005

    Weather: Mainly fine at first, but later locally partly cloudy at times with probability of isolated showers or thunderstorms, especially inland and over mountains.

    Wind: NW'ly to SW'ly gentle to moderate locally fresh during the day NW'ly to NE'ly light to gentle during the night.

    State of sea: Slight locally up to moderate during the day becoming smooth to slight overnight.

    Temperature: Maximum temperatures 28C inland, 26C over south and east coast, 24 C over west coast and 18 C over Prodromos. Minimum temperature 15C inland, 17C over coasts and 9C over Prodromos

    Outlook for Sunday and Monday: 05/06/2005 - 06/06/2005

    The weather will be mainly fine with patchy cloud. Probability of isolated showers or thunderstorms inaldn and over mountains in the aftrnoon. The temperature is expected to rise.

    Spokesman: exploitation of schoolchildren unacceptable

    Nicosia, Jun 2 (CNA) -- Cyprus Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides has described as ''unacceptable'' moves by the Turkish Cypriot regime, in the occupied areas, to use schoolchildren for propaganda purposes.

    ''The Greek Cypriot side had no objection to creating conditions for cooperation and a good climate between the two communities in order to promote the effort for a solution and the reunification of our country,'' the spokesman said, when asked to comment on attempts by the so-called municipality in Rizokarpaso to set up a ''pupils' parliament'' comprising Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot schoolchildren.

    Australia keen on seeing a Cyprus settlement

    Nicosia, Jun 2 (CNA) -- Australia has a very keen interest in seeing a solution to the Cyprus problem, which has persisted for far too long, Australian Special Representative for Cyprus Jim Short has said.

    Speaking to the press after meeting right-wing Democratic Rally President Nicos Anastasiades, Short, who is on a tour to Washington, Athens, Ankara, Brussels, London and Nicosia, said Australia encourages all parties to do what they can to reach a solution, adding that ''it is in the interests of everyone that that solution come sooner rather than later.''

    Cyprus to protest upgrading of Turkish troops

    Nicosia, Jun 2 (CNA) -- Cyprus will protest to the UN moves by the Turkish occupation troops to upgrade its military hardware, Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said here today, commenting on press reports that US-made weapons have been brought into the occupied north in the last two weeks in May.

    ''The occupation army upgrades its hardware all the time and I do not consider this a natural development, bearing in mind in particular the latest efforts to resume negotiations for a political settlement. We shall protest to the UN these moves,'' the spokesman said.

    Nicosia, Jun 2 (CNA) -- The government of Cyprus respects fully the result of the Dutch vote on the European Union Constitution, Government Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides said here today.

    ''We hope that this will not delay moves towards European integration'' he said, adding that all partners must analyse in detail the reasons that lie behind the no vote of the Dutch people and examine its repercussions.

    Cyprus solution through substantive negotiations, says EU Left

    Nicosia, Jun 2 (CNA) -- The European United Left/Nordic Green Left (GUE/NGL) has expressed their support for substantive negotiations, under the UN, as the most appropriate way to find a peaceful, just and mutual acceptable and viable solution in Cyprus.

    A resolution, adopted here today by a GUE/NGL meeting, said that the solution must be based on one state, with a single sovereignty, one international personality and citizenship and its independence and territorial integrity secured, comprising two politically equal communities, as provided by the Security Council resolutions.

    Prendergast: positions of Cypriot sides better understood now

    Nicosia, Jun 2 (CNA) -- Sir Kieran Prendergast, UN Under Secretary for political affairs, leaves Cyprus tonight with a better understanding of the positions, concerns and wishes of the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot sides.

    Speaking after a meeting with President Tassos Papadopoulos, he said it is up to the two sides to reach an agreement which, he pointed out, must be mutually acceptable. He said the UN can facilitate and encourage towards this goal.

    UN spokesman:Prendergast has better understanding of Cyprus situation

    Nicosia, Jun 2 (CNA) -- Deputy UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric has said that UN Undersecretary General for political affairs Sir Kieran Prendergast now has a better understanding of the situation in Cyprus, having concluded his meetings on the island.

    Commenting on Prendergast's regional tour, he said the senior UN official, in his remarks to the press before leaving, pointed out that the solution must come from the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot sides.
