MacShane: Unthinkable for Turkey to join EU without recognizing Cyprus

Nicosia, Apr 15 (CNA) -- British Minister for Europe Dennis MacShane has said that it would be unthinkable and unworkable for Turkey to be admitted to the European Union without recognizing the Republic of Cyprus.

In a letter to MEP Theresa Villiers, MacShane repeated that the UKs government objective remains the reunification of Cyprus.

Cyprus government says statement by TUSIAD is positive

Nicosia, Apr 15 (CNA) Cyprus has described as positive a statement by a representative of the Turkish Industrialists and Businessmen Association (TUSIAD) that called on the Turkish Prime Minister to sign the protocol extending Ankara's customs union agreement with the ten new European Union member states, including Cyprus.

CNA reported from Ankara this morning that TUSIAD representative Zafer Ali Yavan described as nonsense Ankara's position that the docking of Cyprus-flagged ships at Turkish ports and the passage of Cypriot aircraft over Turkey are not part of the customs union agreement.

Director of the Cyprus Presidents Press Office Marios Karoyan said the statement shows Turkey the road it must follow, not only to sign the protocol but also to implement it. For this reason, he said, the spirit and contents of the statement is well within the obligations and commitments that Turkey must fulfill, responding to its EU obligations.
