Foreign Minister: no planned UN visit at present

Nicosia, Apr 9 (CNA) -- Cyprus Foreign Minister George Iacovou has said that UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has not ruled out a fact-finding mission to Cyprus but no such visit is under consideration at this stage.

''The only way to make progress is to dispatch a senior UN official to the area on a fact-finding mission, to talk to the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides,'' the minister said, commenting on Annan's remarks indicating that he is not contemplating to act on Cyprus after the ''elections'' in the Turkish occupied north of the island on April 17.

EP Socialist leader calls on Turkey to recognize Cyprus

    by Nicos Bellos

Brussels, Apr 9 (CNA) --- The recognition of the Republic of Cyprus is a precondition for Turkey if the country is to proceed towards accession negotiations, leader of the Socialist Group at the European Parliament Martin Schulz has stressed after a meeting here with Yiannakis Omirou, leader of the Cyprus Socialdemocrats Movement EDEK.

Moreover Schulz underlined that Turkey has to sign, ratify and put into force the protocol extending its customs union agreement with the ten new EU member states, including the Republic of Cyprus, a press release issued Friday by the Socialist Group said.
