Turkish Cypriots go to the polls

Nicosia, Feb 20 (CNA) -- Voting has begun in the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus, where nearly 150.000 registered persons will cast their ballot to ''elect'' 50 representatives at the self-styled parliament.

Seven political parties and two independent candidates are contesting the ''elections'' and all indications are that only three parties will secure the five per cent ''electoral threshold'', the Republican Turkish party (RTP), the National Unity party (NUP) and the Democratic Party (DP).

Initial results are expected to be announced after midnight tonight. The final outcome of the ''elections'' is due out on Monday evening or possibly Tuesday, when the names of the successful ''candidates'' will be announced.
