    Papadopoulos critical of Straw invitation to Talat

    Nicosia, Jun 25 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos has called on Britain to reflect on the consequences of moves to upgrade the status of the self-styled regime in Turkish occupied Cyprus, saying that he did not agree with such approaches.

    Speaking on his return from visits to Spain and Portugal, he said matters of mutual interests, bilateral concerns, enhancement of ties and issues relating to the European Union were at the core of discussions he had with the prime ministers of both countries.

    Nicosia, Jun 25 (CNA) -- The European Commission has adopted a recommendation for a Council opinion on the first convergence programme of Cyprus, which was submitted on 24 May 2004 and covers the period 2004-2007.

    Artificially incubated vulture presented to media

    Nicosia, Jun 25 (CNA) -- Forestry Department experts have presented to the press a seven-kilo vulture, the first such bird artificially produced in an incubator in Cyprus, saying he was 80 days old and would be released in the wild when appropriate.

    Speaking at a press conference, Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and the Environment Timis Efthymiou said the Griffon vulture came from an egg laid in Limassol zoo, which eight days afterwards was taken to an incubator for the 54-day incubation period.

    The minister said the young vulture was ready to return to the zoo where his natural parents live to get acquainted with them before being let free in the wild.

    President Papadopoulos bestows state medal on French Senator

    Nicosia, Jun 25 (CNA) -- Andre Rouviere, chairman of the French-Cypriot friendship group at the French Senate, was awarded today the Grand Commander of the Order of the Merit of the Republic of Cyprus for his firm and long support over the years to the cause of the Cypriot people to end the division of their country.

    The medal was awarded by Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos at a special ceremony at the Presidential Palace during which Papadopoulos reiterated his determination to continue working for a just and viable settlement and expressed deep appreciation and gratitude for Rouviere's solidarity to the struggle of the people of Cyprus.
