[01] Cyprus President to hold talks with Portugues leaders0830:CYPPRESS:01Cyprus President to hold talks with Portuguese leaders by Athena Arsalidou Lisbon, Jun 23 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos arrived last night in Portugal for talks with the Portuguese leaders, at the invitation of Premier Jose Manuel Durao Barroso. CNA has learnt that the Cyprus President's visit to Portugal has been upgraded according to the protocol that applies to state visits, underscoring the excellent bilateral relations. President Papadopoulos will meet with Portuguese President Jorge Sampaio, Premier Barroso, and President of the Portuguese Parliament Mota Amaral. The issues on the agenda of the talks include bilateral relations, EU matters and international issues such as Iraq and combating terrorism. Cyprus President will also have the chance to brief the Portuguese leaders on recent developments in the Cyprus issue. Cyprus Foreign Minister George Iacovou, who is also in Portugal, will sign a bilateral agreement with his Portuguese counterpart Teresa Gouveia, in the fields of culture, sciences, technology and education. President Papadopoulos arrived last night at Lisbon airport, where he was met by Director of Protocol of the Portuguese Foreign Ministry and Cyprus' Ambassador in Lisbon Thalia Petrides. The Cypriot President and his wife Fotini will meet with the Presidential couple of Portugal at 1100 local time. Talks will follow between President Papadopoulos and President Sampaio with the participation of their respective delegations. At 1200 the Cyprus delegation will depart for the Premier's Office, where Cyprus President will have a private meeting with Premier Barroso followed by talks between the two countries' delegations. Talks will continue during a working lunch in honour of President Papadopoulos, hosted by Premier Barroso. At 1700 local time the Cypriot President will meet with President of the Portuguese Parliament Mota Amaral. President Papadopoulos is accompanied by Foreign Minister George Iacovou, Director of the President's Diplomatic Office Tasos Tzionis, Ambassador of Cyprus to Portugal Thalia Petrides and other officials.
