    Cyprus President to hold talks with Portuguese leaders

    Lisbon, Jun 23 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos arrived last night in Portugal for talks with the Portuguese leaders, at the invitation of Premier Jose Manuel Durao Barroso.

    CNA has learnt that the Cyprus President's visit to Portugal has been upgraded according to the protocol that applies to state visits, underscoring the excellent bilateral relations.

    President Papadopoulos will meet with Portuguese President Jorge Sampaio, Premier Barroso, and President of the Portuguese Parliament Mota Amaral.

    The issues on the agenda of the talks include bilateral relations, EU matters and international issues such as Iraq and combating terrorism. Cyprus President will also have the chance to brief the Portuguese leaders on recent developments in the Cyprus issue.

    Cyprus Foreign Minister George Iacovou, who is also in Portugal, will sign a bilateral agreement with his Portuguese counterpart Teresa Gouveia, in the fields of culture, sciences, technology and education.

    President Papadopoulos arrived last night at Lisbon airport, where he was met by Director of Protocol of the Portuguese Foreign Ministry and Cyprus' Ambassador in Lisbon Thalia Petrides.

    The Cypriot President and his wife Fotini will meet with the Presidential couple of Portugal at 1100 local time. Talks will follow between President Papadopoulos and President Sampaio with the participation of their respective delegations.

    At 1200 the Cyprus delegation will depart for the Premier's Office, where Cyprus President will have a private meeting with Premier Barroso followed by talks between the two countries' delegations.

    Talks will continue during a working lunch in honour of President Papadopoulos, hosted by Premier Barroso.

    At 1700 local time the Cypriot President will meet with President of the Portuguese Parliament Mota Amaral.

    President Papadopoulos is accompanied by Foreign Minister George Iacovou, Director of the President's Diplomatic Office Tasos Tzionis, Ambassador of Cyprus to Portugal Thalia Petrides and other officials.

    New York, Jun 23 (CNA) -- The Co-Chairs of the Congressional Caucus on Hellenic Affairs Michael Bilirakis and Carolyn Maloney have asked their colleagues in the US House of Representatives to join with them in signing on to three letters to President George Bush, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, and Secretary of State Colin Powell regarding the current state of the Cyprus situation.

    The letters call on all three to reengage in a fresh effort to find a just and viable settlement in Cyprus and point out that the rejection of a UN proposed solution plan (the Annan plan) was not a refusal to find a negotiated settlement.

    Already 74 members of the US House of Representatives have signed the letters.

    Lisbon, Jun 23 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos and Portugal's Prime Minister Jose Manuel Durrao Barroso were holding talks in Lisbon on a number of issues, including EU matters and the Cyprus problem.

    The Cypriot President was welcomed at the steps of the Premier's Office by himself the Prime Minister of Portugal.

    Official talks with the participation of the Cypriot and Portuguese delegations on issues concerning bilateral relations, EU, international matters, followed a private meeting between the two leaders.

    President Papadopoulos was due to brief Premier Barroso on recent developments in the Cyprus problem.

    Taking part in the discussions were, on behalf of Cyprus, Foreign Minister George Iacovou, Director of the Diplomatic office of the President Tasos Tzionis and Ambassador in Lisbon Thalia Petrides.

    Lisbon, Jun 23 (CNA) - Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos and Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Manuel Durao Barroso made here today a special reference to the excellent relations between their countries and underlined the prospects of further enhancing them, especially in the fields of commerce and economy.

    In statements to the press, both President Papadopoulos and Premier Barroso noted the importance of today's signing of the first bilateral agreement between both countries, that would include cooperation in the areas of culture, education, sports, media, sciences and technology.

    Nicosia, Jun 23 (CNA) -- Acting President of the Republic Demetris Christofias assured a delegation of the Cyprus-France Friendship Group of the French Senate currently visiting Cyprus, that Greek Cypriots remain committed to a bizonal, bicommunal federal solution.

    The French delegation, headed by Andre Rouviere, is visiting Cyprus at the invitation of the House of Representatives.

    Lisbon, Jun 23 (CNA) - Cyprus and Portugal signed here today their first bilateral agreement.

    The agreement provides for cooperation in the fields of culture, technology, sciences, education, sports and mass media, and was signed this afternoon in Portugal by Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs George Iacovou and Portuguese Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Manuella Franco.
