Cyprus goes to the polls to elect six European Parliament deputies

Nicosia, Jun 13 (CNA) -- Voting began at 0700 (0400 GMT) in Cyprus for the election of six deputies who will be representing the country at the European Parliament, the first time Cypriots are voting in such elections since the Republic joined the European Union along with another nine members in May this year.

Cyprus is one of 19 EU member states where elections for the European Parliament are taking place today.

Former President Clerides casts ballot in EP elections

Nicosia, Jun 13 (CNA) - Former President of the Republic of Cyprus Glafcos Clerides said today much planning was needed about how Cyprus would be handling various issues in the European Parliament.

Speaking after casting his ballot in the elections for the six Cypriot European Parliament members, Clerides said that ''for the first time Cypriots are voting to enter the European Parliament and this means the completion of our accession to the EU.''

''I hope the EMPs we will elect will be the most suitable to tackle the difficulties in the European Parliament,'' he added.

Replying to questions, Clerides said becoming an EU member was ''a tough job because everyone started telling us that we would not join if the Cyprus problem were not solved.''

Chie Returning Officer says EP voting starts smoothly

Nicosia, Jun 13 (CNA) - Voting started smoothly in Cyprus at 0700 local time (0400 GMT) at all polling stations for the election of six Cypriot European Parliament members.

Chief Returning Officer Lazaros Savvides, who is in constant contact with the district returning officers, told CNA that ''so far everything is satisfactory and various minor problems at the polling stations have been overcome.''

Replying to questions, Savvides said the returning officers whose districts are to host Turkish Cypriot voters have assured him that instructions were being followed and relevant information has been posted in the polling stations in the Turkish language.

He also said that measures have been taken to facilitate the Turkish Cypriots crossing into the government-controlled areas of the Republic to vote.

Asked if European Commission observers were on the island for the elections, Savvides said that ''so far it is not clear if these observers have come or not.''

KEA President casts ballot in EP elections

Nicosia, Jun 13 (CNA) - President of the Eurodemocratic Renewal Party (KEA) Antonis Paschalides, whose party is supporting the candidates of the Democratic Party (DIKO) in the elections for the six Cypriot European Parliament members, expressed certainty today that DIKO would receive an enhanced share of votes.

Speaking after casting his ballot, Paschalides said the results of today's elections would ''open new prospects for the solution of the Cyprus problem and the future of Cypriot Hellenism in general.''

He added that the Cypriot voters were exercising their right to vote in a civilised manner and described today's elections ''historic'' because this is the first time that Cyprus is electing European Parliament members.

Democratic Rally President casts ballot in EP elections

Limassol, Jun 13 (CNA) - Democratic Rally President Nicos Anastasiades cast his ballot this morning in elections for the six Cypriot European Parliament members, pointing out that this was an historic day for Cyprus as well as a justification of those who envisioned, struggled and achieved the island's accession to the European Union.

''Today the process of Cyprus' European integration is completed and I believe our people, with their vote, will honour those who were the protagonists in this course,'' Anastasiades said.

He also said he was optimistic about the outcome of the elections, saying that the voters ''judge and honour those who are struggling for a better future of our country.''

Anastasiades noted that the aim of the Democratic Rally was to elect two EMPs and called on the people to exercise their right to vote.

''Let everyone honour with their presence this day of celebration for Europe because today is also a day of celebration for Cyprus and for democracy,'' Anastasiades said, adding that ''everyone's presence is necessary.''

Anastasiades called on the Democratic Rally followers ''not to give anyone the joy of seeing the party's percentage drop, instead to honour and strengthen the party with their vote'' so that within the European Popular Party ''we can implement policies that will help not only Europe but especially and specifically our homeland.''

[06] * President Papadopoulos casts ballot in EP elections

President Papadopoulos casts ballot in EP elections

Nicosia, Jun 13 (CNA) - Cyprus President of the Republic Tassos Papadopoulos described today's elections for the six Cypriot European Parliament members ''historic'' for the country.

Speaking after casting his ballot, President Papadopoulos said ''we are rightly proud of this day, because for the first time Cypriots, as equal European citizens to all others, are participating in this election of European Parliament members.''

''I hope that the election of the EMPs will signal the beginning of a constructive and creative presence in the European Parliament, with an aim at promoting awareness on the necessity to seek a functional, viable, bizonal and bicommunal federation'' in Cyprus, he said.

The President noted that he was ''very satisfied with the civilized manner of the pre-election period'' and expressed hope that voting would continue smoothly ''with a large participation to indicate that Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots participating in the process are focused on Europe and its ideals.''

Commenting on figures indicating that there was a lower turn out at today's poll than in other election processes, President Papadopoulos said ''it is natural, it is not a phenomenon unique to Cyprus.''

''I hope that the percentage of Cypriot citizens voting today will be higher than that in other European countries,'' he added.

In a message to the Turkish Cypriots and world public opinion, President Papadopoulos said ''the Turkish Cypriots had been invited and arrangements were made for them to participate in the voting process and the elections.''

''Unfortunately, the response was not the one expected for many reasons. However, with measures that we are taking and those we will be announcing to financially strengthen the Turkish Cypriots, we give the message that the Republic of Cyprus will represent the whole of the people of Cyprus in the European Parliament, hoping that soon the conditions will be in place to justify the resumption of talks to solve the Cyprus problem,'' he added.

Asked if today's elections would be in any way affected by the result of a referendum in April on a UN solution plan, rejected by the Greek Cypriots and approved by the Turkish Cypriots, President Papadopoulos said ''it is not possible to ignore the expressed will of the people in the referendum but on the other hand it cannot be the sole determining factor because there are many European issues concerning the EU, very important issues, such as the Constitution and the future course of Europe, in which I believe Cyprus must have a voice and a role.''

Larnaca, Jun 13 (CNA) - Deputy President of the Democratic Party (DIKO) Nicos Kleanthous cast his ballot today in the elections for the six Cypriot European Parliament members, noting that the new European circumstances would act as a catalyst for achieving a solution of the Cyprus problem that would reunite the island and create a safe and peaceful future for the future of the people.

Kleanthous said ''today's first European elections are an historic event because Cyprus, an equal member of the EU, is participating in a voting procedure along with 24 other member states to elect our first representatives to the European Parliament.''

He added that ''this fact seals not only our accession but also the active and equal participation of Cyprus in Europe and at the same time justifies our history and culture through the centuries.''

Nicosia, Jun 13 (CNA) - General Secretary of leftwing AKEL party Demetris Christofias expressed certainty that his party would be electing two members of the European Parliament in today's elections for the six Cypriot EMPs.

Speaking after casting his ballot in today's elections, Christofias called on the people of Cyprus to proceed to the polling stations to vote and not show indifference, noting that the decisions taken in Brussels ''will concern our fate as well, especially in the socioeconomic sector.''

Christofias said that even the mere six EMPs ''can play their own role in promoting a solution of the Cyprus problem,'' adding that AKEL ''is the force that knows and speaks of the reality to the people, both about the Cyprus problem and the internal issues, as well as matters concerning the European citizen.''

Turkish Cypriots voting for six Cypriot MEPs

Nicosia, Jun 13 (CNA) - Many Turkish Cypriots have crossed into the government-controlled areas of the Republic to cast their ballots in today's elections for the six Cypriot European Parliament members.

One Turkish Cypriot who exercised his right to vote today, Mehmet Turker Ahmed, said there should have been more Turkish Cypriot candidates than the one on today's ballot.

Ahmed said he was voting today because he believed in peace and reunification, noting however that he was aware of the fact that certain Turkish Cypriots would be displeased with him for voting.

''I know the problem I will have because the police will see my photograph in your newspapers but I don't care. I am voting for a solution,'' he said.

Other Turkish Cypriots said they were pleased to be voting today for the first European Parliament elections and expressed hope that the fact they were voting along with the Greek Cypriots would bring the two communities closer to a solution of the Cyprus problem.

Most of those who arrived managed to vote without any problem but at one of the polling stations hosting Turkish Cypriot voters, a Turkish Cypriot couple arrived at the station to vote only to find that neither was registered in the electoral roll and thus could not vote.

The two Turkish Cypriots said they had registered but were not given any proof of their registration.

Chief Returning Officer Lazaros Savvides was informed of the incident and said he would look into it and reply as soon as possible.

Speaking after casting his ballot, Omirou said ''the Cypriot citizens, along with 453 million other European citizens, will be electing the members of the new European Parliament, aiming at a Europe of vision and expectations.''

Omirou said ''the Movement of Social Democrats EDEK and the 24 other socialist parties of the EU member states have submitted a comprehensive programme before the European citizens for the progress and development of Europe, for a Europe politically unified, for a Europe of citizens and peoples, for a Europe of social solidarity and cohesion.''

Interior Minister says voting for MEPs proceeding smoothly

Nicosia, Jun 13 (CNA) - Minister of the Interior Andreas Christou said today that voting for the election of the six Cypriot members of the European Parliament was running smoothly so far but noted the low percentage of voters by 1000 local time (0700 GMT).

''The impression I get from certain polling stations I visited in Limassol is that the atmosphere is very calm, maybe the calmest we have ever had, but the low rate of voting, which is lower that the last elections, causes concern and I do not know if this means we will have a larger abstention or if, due to the hot weather, the people decided to organise their day differently,'' he said.

Asked about the participation of Turkish Cypriots in the elections, the Minister said a few have already voted, both those living in the government-controlled areas of the Republic and those who crossed over from the Turkish-occupied areas.

Christou told CNA that he would be spending the rest of the day in his Ministry until the final results are announced tonight but at intervals he would be visiting polling stations and other points of special interest.

Speaking after casting his ballot, Perdikis said ''today we submitted a clear political proposal before the people of Cyprus, a proposal for the liberation and unity of Cyprus, a proposal for the protection of the environment and the rights of the citizens.''

''We expect that the European Cypriot citizens will support this clear political proposal and will give strength to their own voice, will enhance the Movement of Ecologists and Environmentalists in these elections,'' he added.

Speaking after casting his ballot in today's elections, Matsis said the Cypriot MEPs would also have to try ''to convince the Europeans that the solution of the Cyprus problem must be achieved soon, our homeland must be reunified within European dimensions and human rights and freedoms must be restored as they are in all EU member states, to the benefit of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, of peace and stability in our region.''

Speaking after casting his ballot in the elections for the six Cypriot MEPs, Efthymiou said ''tomorrow we will make our first assessment after today's results and for us the road continues for further organisation in our Movement.''

He said that, despite the mere six Cypriot MEPs in a total of 732, ''if people who have knowledge, are trustworthy and have long-standing political connections are elected, they will have an important role to play.''

The participation of Kyrenia voters is expected to be larger than that of the Karpass voters, as the Karpass Coordinating Committee announced that the enclaved persons in the peninsula were refusing to vote in protest against the Turkish occupation regime, which did not make arrangements to facilitate voting in their villages.

Asked about the 391 registered Greek Cypriot enclaved persons, Savvides said that only 61 of them (or 15.60%) have crossed to the government controlled areas to vote.

Savvides said that 54 Turkish Cypriots were registered in the Kyrenia district, and only 9 went to the polling stations.

In the Nicosia district, 160 Turkish Cypriots were registered and 41 voted, in Limassol 22 from the 139 registered Turkish Cypriots voted, in Famagusta 19 from 134, in Larnaca 6 out of the 14 registered, and in Pafos two Turkish Cypriots were registered but no one voted.

Savvides said that 70% of registered voters had cast their ballots in the Nicosia district, 69% in the Limassol district, 72.5% in the Famagusta district, 73% in the Larnaca district and 73% in the Paphos district.

''The percentage of 70.4% of the registered voters that cast their vote today is considered low but on the other hand very satisfactory, if we take into consideration the percentages of the other European countries'' Savvides told CNA.

He noted that the counting of votes has already started and is being conducted at the polling stations.
