    Nicosia, May 13 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    Friday and Saturday 14/5/2004 to 15/5/2004 -------------------- Fine with high cloud. Winds will be light to moderate southwesterly to westerly and the state of sea slight to moderate. Temperature will range between 12C and 27C inland, 14C and 25C over coastal areas and from 9C to 20C over Troodos area.

    Outlook for Sunday and Monday: 16/5/2004 to 17/5/2004 ----------------------- Locally partly cloudy with probability of isolated showers. Temperature is expected to fall by a couple of degrees.

    Greek Development Minister assures of Athens' support

    Larnaca, May 13 (CNA) -- Greece's Development Minister Demetris Sioufas has assured that the Greek government and the country's political forces would continue to support Cyprus.

    Speaking on arrival at the start of a two-day official visit, he said he was pleased he was in ''Cyprus which is now a member of the European Union.''

    EU operation to combat illegal immigration underway

    Nicosia, May 13 (CNA) -- A 13-day exercise to combat illegal immigration, with the participation of seven European Union members including Cyprus as well as Europol, has so far yielded positive results, according to Alberto Di Luca, President of the Schengen, Europol and Immigration Committee of the Italian Parliament.

    Speaking at a joint press conference with chief of police Tasos Panayiotou, Di Luca said these results proved the close and effective cooperation achieved among participating states and underlined that Cyprus as a newcomer to the EU could prove its cooperative spirit through the second phase of operation code-named NETTUNO.

    He also praised the very close cooperation between Cyprus and Italy but also the concerted action among participating countries.

    Nicosia, May 13 (CNA) -- The Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe has expressed regret that it was not possible to reunify Cyprus, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion, following a UN proposal for a political settlement.

    Cyprus President: new prospects for solution will arise

    Nicosia, May 13 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos believes that new prospects and new possibilities will emerge that will help find a political settlement, adding that European principles could help formulate the appropriate conditions for a solution that would address the legitimate concerns of Greek and Turkish Cypriots.

    Papadopoulos assured Turkish Cypriots of his firm adherence to a functional solution of a bizonal bicommunal federation that would allow Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots live in peace and freedom, security, progress and prosperity.

    In his address at the opening of the 29th International Fair, he said this year's Fair opened its gates days after Cyprus joined the European Union, something he described as ''a historic challenge'' which marks the beginning of a new era with great prospects and possibilities as well as problems and difficulties.
