The spokesman expressed the hope the ''elections'' to be ''fully free and fair and that the will of the Turkish Cypriots will be reflected in the choice of negotiator for their community.'' He said the number of foreign workers, who are legally in Cyprus, has quickly increased and that their countries of origin are mainly Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Bulgaria, Syria, India, Egypt and Russia. In his address Christou said that another large number of immigrants in Cyprus are students who are called temporary immigrants and their number is around 8,000 with main countries of origin Bangladesh, Pakistan and India. Referring to illegal immigration, the minister said it has increased the last few years, noting that they are mostly from Syria, Iran, Turkey, Sri Lanka and Iraq.
