Weston indicates pressure should be exerted on T/C side

Nicosia, Jun 14 (CNA) Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos said he has not ascertained that the US will undertake a new initiative to promote the Cyprus problem.

He also said that Weston conveyed that pressure should be exerted on the Turkish Cypriot side.

Papadopoulos was speaking after he received on Friday evening US Special Coordinator for Cyprus, Thomas Weston, who is in Cyprus as part of his tour to the region.

Describing the meeting as extremely friendly, sincere and useful, Papadopoulos said Weston informed him on his views on the current conditions in Turkey and Cyprus and discussed prospects for the resumption of the Cyprus peace talks.

I reiterated the National Councils firm position that that we are ready, at any moment, when we are invited by the Secretary-General, to resume the talks under the UN auspices, the President said.

Asked whether he has established from their discussion whether there will be a new initiative to resume the peace talks, Papadopoulos replied, I have not ascertained such thing.

Asked whether the US believe the UN General Assembly in New York in September will be the right forum for deliberations on the Cyprus problem, President Papadopoulos replied:

«The US have a special interest for a Cyprus settlement, (and I have thanked Mr. Weston for this), remain very actively involved and have indicated that pressure should be exerted on the Turkish Cypriot side, and every opportunity to meet the Secretary-General, such as the one at the UN, will be an opportunity to investigate possibilities to resume the talks.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 percent of the islands territory. The latest effort to reach a settlement collapsed when the Turkish side refused to put to a referendum the solution plan proposed by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.
