    UN spokesman points to the need for lasting settlement

    United Nations, May 7 (CNA) -- The UN has welcomed the easing of restrictions on free movement in Cyprus, but stressed the need for a lasting settlement of the island's political problem pointing out that all core issues are still pending.

    Greek and Turkish Cypriots continue to cross the divide

    Nicosia, May 7 (CNA) -- Around 800 Cypriots crossed the ceasefire line today, according to figures released by the police.

    A police press release said that by eight this morning 231 Turkish Cypriots came into the southern government controlled part of Cyprus and 556 Greek Cypriots went to the northern Turkish occupied areas, all of whom used the three available crossing points, one in Nicosia and two on the south east.

    Fitch rates Cyprus low credit risk country

    Nicosia, May 7 (CNA) -- An international public finance service, Fitch, has given Cyprus a rating denoting a low expectation of credit risk and a strong capacity for timely payment of financial commitments.

    This is the general assessment in the 2002 Fitch report on Cyprus, published last month, which said that growth slowed last year as tourist arrivals fell by 10.3 per cent in the aftermath of September 11th attacks against the US.

    Government rejects trade-offs with occupation regime

    Nicosia, May 7 (CNA) - The Cyprus government considers the decision of the Turkish occupation regime to ease restrictions in the freedom of movement to be a legal and political obligation on its part and not a measure to get something in return.

    ''The partial lifting of restrictions (in the freedom of movement) imposed by the occupation regime for 29 years now is not a measure to discuss trade-offs'', Government Spokesman Kypros Chrisostomides said here Wednesday after a cabinet meeting.
