    WCC seeks to maintain momentum of Cyprus negotiations

    Nicosia, Mar 27 (CNA) -- A desire to learn more about the aspirations of the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities, including the Church of Cyprus - in order to build on peace negotiations - is the reason of the visit here by a World Council of Churches (WCC) staff delegation.

    According to a WCC press release, after the collapse of The Hague talks on Cyprus, ''the visit will help the WCC give guidance to the global ecumenical fellowship as it continues to accompany the peace process.''

    Cyprus announces its observers to the European Parliament

    Nicosia, Mar 28 (CNA) -- House of Representatives President Demetris Christofias announced here today the names of the six Cypriot deputies who will sit as observers on the European Parliament until Cyprus becomes a full member of the EU, on May 1, 2004.

    They are Doros Christodoulides and Eleni Mavrou (AKEL), Panagiotis Demetriou and Demetris Syllouris (DISI), Andreas Angelides (DIKO), and Vasos Lyssarides (KISOS).

    Christofias handed the list to EP Secretary General Julian Priestley, who noted that Cyprus was the first among the 10 acceding states to do so.

    UN report: Cyprus partition obstacle to respect of human rights

    Nicosia, Mar 28 (CNA) -- Cyprus' division and the political situation on the island prevent universal application of human rights throughout the country, a UN report has said.

    It also notes that a comprehensive settlement of the political impasse would help greatly the situation of human rights in Cyprus.

    The report, prepared by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, will be presented next week to the UN Commission's 59th session, which is underway in Geneva. It covers the period up to January 2003, before the collapse of the latest UN effort to reach a comprehensive settlement.

    Iacovou: No other document can be incorporated into Accession Treaty

    Nicosia, Mar 28 (CNA) -- There is no possibility any document to be incorporated in the Accession Treaty of the Republic of Cyprus to the European Union, Cyprus Foreign Minister Georgios Iacovou said here today.

    He was speaking after meeting with the ambassadors to Cyprus of the permanent members of the UN Security Council, in view of the report of the UN Secretary-Generals Special Adviser on Cyprus, Alvaro de Soto, to the Security Council.

    Iacovou said it has not been decided yet whether there will be a public debate at the Security Council on Cyprus and whether a resolution or statement by the Council President will be pursued.

    Travel to Cyprus is safe, says government

    Nicosia, Mar 28 (CNA) The Cyprus government said Cyprus has not been directly affected by the war in Iraq and assured that visits to the island can be considered safe both for tourism and the use of its international airports as transit points.

    An official statement released here Friday because of the situation in Iraq said there is no serious reason for concern because Cyprus is away from the war theatre operations.

    Schwimmer concerned about tension in occupied Cyprus

    Nicosia, Mar 28 (CNA) Council of Europe Secretary-General Walter Schwimmer expressed his concern about what he described as tense political situation'' in the occupied north of Cyprus and appealed to ''all authorities'' to respect, now and in the future, freedom of expression.

    In a statement, Schwimmer referred to the political confrontation regarding a symbolic referendum on the UN plan for the solution of the Cyprus issue which led to the temporary arrest and indictment of Turkish Cypriot ''opposition'' leaders of the group This country is ours in the occupied areas.

    Schwimmer appealed to all authorities in the occupied areas to respect, now and in the future, freedom of expression on their territory, noting we must not forget that, despite the particular political and legal situation in the occupied areas, its citizens continue to be protected by the European Convention on Human Rights.
