    Euro MP warns Turkey about EU obligations

    Brussels, Mar 26 (CNA) -- It is inconceivable for Turkey to begin accession negotiations with the European Union before a political settlement of the Cyprus question, Arie Oostlander, rapporteur for Turkey's EU membership at the European Parliament, has said.

    The Euro MP warned Ankara that Cyprus could prove to be a very big obstacle in its course to EU accession and said that Turkey's possible military intervention in Iraqi territory would jeopardise further the country's European aspirations.

    He said that unless the Turkish government severs its links with the military, it will not achieve anything.

    Washington, Mar 26 (CNA) -- Seventeen members of the US Congress have called on the US administration to use all available political and diplomatic means to persuade Turkey to work constructively to resolve the Cyprus question in a manner consistent with the UN process.

    In a letter to US President George Bush the 17 Congresspersons expressed great disappointment for the breakdown of the UN-sponsored Cyprus peace talks in The Hague earlier this month and underlined that ''all of the facts lead to the inescapable conclusion that the cause of the breakdown is the intransigence of Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash and his supporters in Ankara.''

    Nicosia, Mar 26 (CNA) -- The illegal regime in the Turkish-occupied north of Cyprus prohibited on Sunday the conducting of a referendum that was expected to be held in the occupied village of Elia and arrested a number of persons, including Turkish Cypriot politician Izzet Izcan.

    Brussels, Mar 26 (CNA) - Cyprus has the youngest population among the 25 member states and acceding countries of the European Union, according to Eurostat demographic data for 2001, which show that 23.9% of the Cyprus population is under the age of 14 whereas the average percentage of the EU is 16.8%.

    Larnaca, Mar 26, (CNA) -- A six-member delegation of the Russia-Cyprus Friendship Group in the State Duma arrived on the island today for a visit aimed at discussing the enhancement of relations between the parliaments of Cyprus and Russia, as well as promoting the cooperation between the two countries.

    Speaking to CNA at Larnaca Airport, President of the Group Nikolay Daykhes said ''we will discuss the further enhancement of the relations between our parliaments'', adding that during the meeting with President of the Republic Tassos Papadopoulos and the members of the government ''we will discuss ways to assist the further development of our cooperation''.
