EU agrees on UN proposal for a Donors' Conference

Brussels, Feb 14 (CNA) -- Ôhe European Union supports the UN proposal
for an International Donors' Conference to be held soon after the
signing of a political agreement and the reunification of Cyprus.
In a Declaration by the Greek Presidency on behalf of the European
Union regarding a Donorss Conference for Cyprus it is also noted that
''the European Commission has already announced its readiness to
organise the conference in question, after the signature of the
Political Agreement''.

History of presidential elections in Cyprus
Nicosia, Feb 14 (CNA) -- Cyprus is a Republic with a presidential system of government.
Under the 1960 Constitution, executive power is ensured by the President of the Republic, elected by universal suffrage for a five-year term of office. The executive power is exercised by the Council of Ministers, which is appointed by the President of the Republic.
According to the Constitution the President of the Republic is elected by the Greek Cypriot Community and the Vice-President by the Turkish Cypriot Community.
FIRST PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS – 13 December 1959

The first presidential elections in Cyprus were held December 13, 1959, eight months before independence.
First President of the Republic was Archbishop Makarios, who received 144.501 votes. His rival, Ioannis Clerides, a prominent lawyer and father of incumbent President Glafcos Clerides, received 71,753.
The 1964 presidential elections were not held because of intercommunal clashes between the Greek Cypriots and the Turkish Cypriots. The Turkish Cypriot representatives were withdrawn from all state positions. The President’s term in office was extended after a decision of the House of Representatives.

In February 1968 President Makarios faced Takis Evdokas. From a total of 247,653 valid votes, Makarios received 95.45% and Evdokas 3.71% and a total of 8,577 votes.
PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS - 18 February 1973

In 1973, President Makarios was re-elected unopposed. No voting was held.
BY-ELECTION PRESIDENTIAL VOTE – 10 September 1977

In 1977, following the death of Makarios on August 3, House President Spyros Kyprianou was elected President unopposed during elections on 10 September 1977 to cover the rest of the presidential term.

On 5 February 1978 Spyros Kyprianou was re-elected unopposed.
PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS – 13 February 1983

On 13 February 1983, President Kyprianou was re-elected supported by his party, the Democratic Party, and left-wing AKEL. He received 173,791 votes, or 56.54 percent from a total of 307,392 valid votes.
His rivals Glafcos Clerides of the Democratic Rally and Vassos Lyssarides of the Socialist Party EDEK garnered 104,294 votes or 33.93 percent and 29.307 votes or 9.53% respectively.
PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS – 14 February 1988

On 14 February 1988, George Vassiliou became the third President of the Republic of Cyprus. He was elected on the second round held on 21 February 1989.
During the first round, on 14 February 1988, from a total of 334,639 valid votes, the candidates received:

Because of the results of the first round, that is no candidate securing 50 percent plus one vote, a second round was held the following Sunday between the first two candidates. George Vassiliou was elected President for a five-year term in office. He had secured 167,834 votes or 51.6% from a total of 325,062 valid votes.

PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS - 7 February 1993

On 14 February 1993, Glafcos Clerides was the fourth President of the Republic of Cyprus. He was elected President in the second round of voting.
During the first round of 7 February, 1993, from a total of 355,635 valid votes, the candidates received:

First public hearing for second mobile phone license in Cyprus
Nicosia, Feb 14 (CNA) -- The first public hearing on the contest
documents for the grant of an additional mobile telecommunications
license in Cyprus was held here today.
The licence is expected to be granted this June and the selected
company will start running the second mobile telecommunication service
in Cyprus end of 2003.
Representatives from five organisations (Cosmote, Spiderphone,
Vodafone, Monacotelecom and Cyprus Telecommunication Authority) that
showed interest to run the second mobile telecommunication company
expressed during today's hearing their views on the subject.
The Commission of Telecommunications and Postal Regulation and the
Directory of Telecommunications of the Ministry of Communications and
Works will examine the comments heard today in order to finalise the
contest documents.

Nicosia, Feb 14 (CNA) -- Cyprus Government Spokesman Michalis
Papapetrou said today that, following representations by the
International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), the US has withdrawn
a notice to Mediterranean countries with regard to sea and air traffic
in the region.

UN top envoy says things will change after April 16
Nicosia, Feb 14 (CNA) -- Alvaro de Soto, the UN Secretary General's
Special Adviser on Cyprus, has warned that failure to reach a
negotiated settlement by the end of February means that things will
change after April 16, when Cyprus is to sign its Accession Treaty with
the European Union.

UN-led talks on Cyprus to continue Monday
Nicosia, Feb 14 (CNA) -- Another meeting took place this evening
between President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf
Denktash, in the context of the ongoing UN-led talks to solve the
Cyprus problem.
Today's encounter, in the presence of the UN Secretary General's
Special Adviser on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto, was rather brief, compared
with previous meetings, which take place in the UN protected area
within Nicosia Airport.
There was a slight delay to the start of the meeting, which was also
attended by the aides of the two leaders.

Larnaca, Feb 14 (CNA) - Minister of Foreign Affairs Ioannis Kasoulides
noted here Friday it has been repeatedly said that the US will not give
the Turkish government anything in return regarding the Cyprus issue if
it helps the US during its war on Iraq.
