    British envoy on Cyprus visits Ankara for talks

    Nicosia, Feb 3 (CNA) -- Britain's special representative for Cyprus, Lord David Hannay, is in Ankara for contacts with the Turkish government to press on with a UN demand for an agreement on a political settlement in Cyprus by the end of February.

    Nicosia-based British High Commission press spokesman Stuart Summers told CNA that Hannay will be meeting Turkish Under-secretary at the Foreign Ministry Ugur Ziyal, senior government officials and will sit at a working lunch with Turkish politicians.

    House President sends condolences to US

    Nicosia, Feb 3 (CNA) -- Cyprus House President Demetris Christofias has expressed ''deep shock and distress'' over the untimely loss of the seven astronauts, killed when the space shuttle Columbia exploded in mid air just before landing in the US last Saturday.

    The message of condolences was sent to the President of the Senate and Vice President Dick Cheney and the President of the House of Representatives Dennis Harstert.

    ''On behalf of all the members of the House of Representatives and on my own behalf, I should like to express my deep shock and distress for the heavy toll of innocent lives perished on board the space shuttle Columbia,'' Christofias said.

    ''The unexpected loss of seven astronauts, who dedicated their lives to space exploration, has left the international community and more particularly the scientific world, in a state of profound sadness,'' he said.

    Nicosia, Feb 3 (CNA) -- The thorny issue of territory was the focus of discussions between President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Dentkash at their meeting today, in the context of the UN-led peace negotiations.

    According to reliable sources, this was the first time the two sides started negotiations on territory.

    ''Discussions on territory began today, this is unprecedented, and talks on this issue will continue on Wednesday in greater depth,'' the same sources said.
