    EU calls on Turkey to contribute to Cyprus solution

    Nicosia, Aug 6 (CNA) -- The European Union expects Turkey to contribute in a positive manner towards a negotiated settlement in Cyprus and support the UN efforts in this direction, Jean Christophe Filori, press spokesman of the EU Commissioner for enlargement, has said.

    He also said that constitutional reforms within Turkey itself and the question of Cyprus are two separate issues.

    Paphos, Aug 6 (CNA) -- US Congressmen have said Cyprus is doing a good job in the global effort to fight international terrorism.

    CNA and XINHUA to further upgrade cooperation

    Nicosia, Aug 6 (CNA) -- The Cyprus News Agency and the XINHUA News Agency have decided to take their existing cooperation a step further.

    The decision was taken today in Beijing at a meeting between delegations from the two agencies. A cooperation protocol will be signed to this effect in Cyprus at a later stage.

    A CNA delegation, comprising the Chairman of the Board Charilaos Papadopoulos, Vice-Chairman Petros Zachariadis and Director Themis Themistocleous, is on an official visit to China, at the invitation of XINHUA President and General Director Tian Congming.

    Today, the delegation, accompanied by Cyprus' new Ambassador to China Petros Kestoros, met Tian, who agreed to specific suggestions CNA has made with a view at further upgrading cooperation between the two agencies, that dates back to 1997.

    Refugees call on UN to work for just solution

    Nicosia, Aug 6 (CNA) -- Greek Cypriot refugees from the Turkish-occupied villages of Lapithos and Karavas, in Kyrenia district, have urged the UN to insist on a just and viable solution in Cyprus, based on the resolutions it has adopted and not on the current division and Turkish occupation of the island.

    Nicosia, Aug 6 (CNA) -- Cyprus' Chief Negotiator for Accession to the European Union and President of the United Democrats, George Vassiliou, said today that if despite all efforts the Cyprus problem were not solved by December, the island would still accede to the EU.

    Cyprus to take measures regarding Abdallah Daoud

    Nicosia, Aug 6 (CNA) -- Minister of Foreign Affairs Ioannis Kasoulides and Minister of Justice and Public Order Nicos Koshis have decided to take measures regarding Abdallah Daoud, the Palestinian who still remains on the island after he was brought to Cyprus three months ago along with 12 others who had been released from Bethlehem's Nativity Church.

    Koshis told reporters that Daoud is causing problems to the Cypriot authorities as he is not cooperating with them and not respecting the terms of hospitality.

    "One of the measures is to warn the Palestinian that he is a guest of the Republic of Cyprus and he has to cooperate with the authorities", Koshis said.
