Nicosia, Aug 5 (CNA) -- Christakis Katsambas, one of the island's most prominent journalists, former president of the Union of Cyprus Journalists and ex chairman of the Board of Directors of the Cyprus News Agency, has died of serious heart and kidney problems.

The funeral will take place at 1700 today from the church of Agii Omologite here, at the expense of the Union.

Katsambas, 77, died Sunday at Nicosia General Hospital where he was admitted some weeks ago for treatment. During his long career in journalism he served as editor in chief of the largest daily "Phileleftheros" and was an honorary parliamentary candidate for the Democractic Rally party.

He served as MP for a brief period during which he was acting House President and acting President of the Republic. In the recent past he was editorial adviser to "Phileleftheros" and had a daily column.

The Union announced that it will introduce an annual journalistic award in Katsambas' memory and display his photograph at its offices in Nicosia.

It extended its most sincere and heartfelt condolences to the next of kin of the deceased and described him as a true professional who served journalism with dedication.

Katsampas was a founding member of the Union of Cyprus Journalists in 1959-60 and served as Union Vice-President and President for several years.

He also served as President of the Board of Directors of the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) from 1990 to 1995.

Nicosia, Aug 5 (CNA) -- The Central Bank said in its annual report for 2001 that public deficit increased in the year under review, inflation and unemployment dropped and basic interest rates were reduced.

For the current year, it said economic growth is expected to increase, unemployment and inflation are set to rise but public deficit will probably stay within the Maastrcht criteria.

The Bank said it will continue to implement at an accelerated rate measures to align its practices with those of the European Union, as Cyprus looks forward to the conclusion of its accession negotiations at the end of the year.

"The year under review was marked by the terrorist attacks of 11 September which contributed to the worsening of the global economic recession," the report said.
