Cypriots in Britain demand freedom for homeland

London, Jul 22 (CNA) -- Thousands of Greek Cypriots living in Britain marched through the main streets of London yesterday, demanding freedom and justice for Cyprus and the withdrawal of Turkish troops and settlers from Cyprus.

Chanting slogans and holding Cyprus flags and placards, the demonstrators called on the British government and the international community to work for the restoration of human rights of all Cypriots grossly violated by Turkey for the past 28 years.

The annual march, coinciding with the anniversary of the Turkish invasion (20 July 1974) and occupation of 37 per cent of Cyprus' territory, started from Victoria Embankment. The march ended at Trafalgar Square, where the main speaker was Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs Ioannis Kasoulides.

Weather forecast for Cyprus

Nicosia, Jul 22 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

On Tuesday (July 23) and Wednesday (July 24), the weather will be generally fine with fresh sea breezes. Seas will be slight at night and locally up to moderate during the day. Temperatures will range from 22 to 37 degrees Celsius inland and from 22 to 35 degrees along the coast.

On Thursday (July 25) and Friday (July 26), the weather will remain fine.

Cyprus and USA sign MOU to protect Cyprus' cultural heritage

Nicosia, Jul 22 (CNA) -- USA and Cyprus recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that restricts the import of archeological objects from Cyprus to the USA.

Cyprus' Ambassador to the US Erato Kozakou Markoulli and State Department officer Lynn Pascoe signed the Memorandum at the State Department.

Sixty Cypriot athletes to compete in Commonwealth Games

Nicosia Jul 22 (CNA)-- The first part of Cyprus' national team will be leaving the island tomorrow for Manchester, Britain, to participate in the 17th Commonwealth Games to be held from July 25 to August 4.

Technical Advisor for the Cyprus Olympic Committee, Alecos Spanos, said that a total of 60 Cypriot athletes would be participating in the Games, adding that they had many chances for distinction.

De Soto briefs the Danish Presidency on direct talks

Nicosia, Jul 22 (CNA) -- The UN Secretary General's Special Adviser on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto has briefed Danish Minister of Foreign Affairs Per Stig Moller, whose country is currently holding the EU rotating Presidency, on developments in the UN-led direct talks between Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash since January this year, with a view to reach a comprehensive settlement of the protracted Cyprus problem.

Government says Denktash's statements a burst of hatred

Nicosia, Jul 22 (CNA) - Government Spokesman Michalis Papapetrou today described statements by Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, during events organised to mark the 28th anniversary of the 1974 Turkish invasion of the island, as "a burst of hatred and intolerance".

Denktash was quoted as saying that if the Turkish army had not intervened in 1974 the Turkish Cypriots would be in mass graves, and that the Greek Cypriots wanted to take away Turkish Cypriot land.

Papapetrou described the Turkish Cypriot leader's statements as "levelling, provocative and shameful", noting that "even distortion and propaganda have their limits but in this case Denktash has managed to cross them".

Nicosia, Jul 22(CNA)-- Chairman of BND Energy Corporation Pierre Philippe and Michel Rocard, former Prime Minister of France and Member of the European Parliament handed over today to Cyprus Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Nicos Rolandis an innovative project providing for the production of electricity by using Cyprus solid waste.
