    Foreign Minister: complacency on EU accession not advisable

    Larnaca, Jun 6 (CNA) -- Cyprus Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides has cautioned about complacency with regard to Cyprus' accession course and stressed the need to continue working until the country joins the European Union.

    The minister said that the EU would examine carefully the attitude of the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides at the UN-led peace talks, as it is getting ready to issue its decision on the country's EU membership, in accordance with the Helsinki conclusions that said a political settlement would facilitate accession but it is not a precondition for it and all relevant factors will be taken into consideration.

    Weather forecast for Cyprus

    Nicosia, Jun 6 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    The weather on Friday (June 7) and Saturday (June 8) will be mainly fine. Winds will be northeasterly, light to moderate, over slight to moderate seas.

    Temperatures on Friday will range between 18 to 34 degrees Celsius inland, between 18 and 30 degrees Celsius along east and south coasts, and between 18 and 28 degrees Celsius along the west coast. On Saturday, the temperature is expected to rise by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius.

    The weather on Sunday (June 9) and Monday (June 10) is expected to be fine and hot.

    House President flies to Madrid to attend EU Conference

    Nicosia, Jun 6 (CNA) -- Cyprus House of Representatives President Demetris Christofias leaves tomorrow for Madrid, to attend a conference of the EU member state House Presidents, at the invitation of the Presidents of the Spanish Congress of Deputies and the Senate, Luisa Fernanda Rudi and Esperanza Aguirre Gil de Biedma respectively.

    The conference, organised by the Spanish parliament, within the framework of the current EU Spanish presidency, will address the issue of "Parliaments and the European Construction", which is separated in two sections.

    European officials conclude working visit to Cyprus

    Nicosia, June 6 (CNA) -- Spanish Secretary of State for European Affairs, Ramon de Miguel, whose country is currently holding the EU rotating presidency, paid today a one-day working visit to the island and had separate meetings with Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash.

    De Miguel, who was accompanied by the Danish Secretary of State Carsten Sondergaard, whose country will hold the EU presidency during the second half of 2002, and the EU's Chief Negotiator with Cyprus Leopold Maurer, refrained from making any statements to the press after his meeting with President Clerides.
