House blames many for Stock Exchange problems

Nicosia, Jun 5 (CNA) -- A voluminous report on the Cyprus Stock Exchange, prepared by two House of Representatives Committees investigating allegations of mismanagement, misconduct and fraud during 1999 and 2000, said the cabinet, the Finance Minister, the Police Force and the Law Office of the Republic have political responsibilities for what happened at the Stock Exchange in the period under review.

The House Watchdog and Finance Committees said in their report that previous Stock Exchange Boards and Securities Exchange Commissions, the Central Bank, the chairmen of the two major banking institutions (the Bank of Cyprus and the Popular Bank), the association of brokers, and accountants and lawyers who might have allowed misleading information about companies to filter through to the public also have a share of special responsibility.
