    Weather forecast for Cyprus

    Nicosia, Apr 29 (CNA) -- The Meteorological Office at Larnaca International Airport has issued the following weather forecast for Cyprus:

    Tuesday and Wednesday: 30/4/2002 to 01/05/2002

    The weather will be mostly fine on Tuesday.

    On Wednesday, there will be some cloud development over Troodos with a chance of local showers in the afternoon. The winds will be fresh southwesterlies and the sea will be generally slight. Temperature will range from 11 to 26 inland and from 11 to 23 on the coast.

    Outlook for Tursday and Friday: 02/05/2002 to 03/05/2002

    Monstly fine with occassional inland cloud during the afternoon. Small rise in temperature.

    Nicosia welcomes Dublin's decision on flights to occupied Cyprus

    Nicosia, Apr 29 (CNA) -- Cyprus has welcomed a decision by the Irish government to reject an application for flights from Dublin to Cyprus' Turkish occupied areas, with a stop over in Turkey.

    Commerce, Industry and Tourism Minister Nicos Rolandis described the decision as "a politically correct position and sends a positive political message" and said it could set a precedent which other countries may adopt.

    Ireland has refused permission by the so-called Turkish Cypriot Airlines, operating in the self-styled regime in occupied Cyprus, to fly from Dublin via Turkey to the northern part of the island.

    Hamburg, Apr 29 (CNA) -- Cyprus Airways has purchased two Airbus "A319" planes, one of which will be delivered tomorrow at a ceremony to take place in Hamburg. The second aircraft will be delivered in June, in Toulouse, France.

    Clerides and Denktash continue direct talks

    Nicosia, Apr 29 (CNA) -- Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash had a 75-minute meeting today in the context of UN-led peace talks to solve the Cyprus problem.

    Present at the meeting were the UN Secretary General's Special Adviser on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto and aides to the two leaders.

    The next meeting between Clerides and Denktash will take place on May 7, after a short break in the talks, as on May 5 Greek Cypriots celebrate their most important religious feast, Easter.

    Archbishop suffers myoclonia

    Nicosia, Apr 29 (CNA) -- Archbishop of the Church of Cyprus Chrysostomos, 75, has suffered myoclonia, as a result of a fractured skull he suffered when he fell down the Archbishopric's front steps on Saturday. He had also suffered spine fractures and was admitted to the Nicosia General Hospital for treatment.

    Cypriot political parties call for substantial negotiations

    Nicosia, Apr 29 (CNA) -- Leaders and representatives of Greek and Turkish Cypriot political parties met today in Nicosia and issued a statement in which they "urge the leaders of both communities to start discussing the substance of the Cyprus problem during their direct talks" held since January 16 between President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash with the view to find a comprehensive settlement to the Cyprus problem.

    Larnaca, Apr 29 (CNA) -- The UN Secretary General's Special Adviser on Cyprus Alvaro de Soto left Cyprus today for New York in order to brief UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, the five permanent members of the Security Council and the Security Council plenary on the direct talks between the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus.

    Denktash says he gave Greek Cypriot side a non-paper

    Nicosia, Apr 29 (CNA) -- Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash has said he submitted a non-paper to Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides at their meeting today, the last one in the framework of the third round of UN-led direct talks between the leaders of the two communities on the island.

    In statements after the meeting, Denktash said the non-paper contains the positions of the Turkish Cypriot side, as well as those of the Greek Cypriot side.
